Weird Smell, Maybe Due to The Machine

Post by rzw » Sat May 26, 2018 4:36 am

This may be nothing, but just curious if anyone has had any issues with their machine, that they noticed an odd order......This may have nothing to due with the machine, but it is quite odd.....I noticed yesterday, this weird, maybe somewhat chemical in order smell hanging with me all day and now today......I will say, I noticed this same odor 1 day over the winter months, but it only lasted a day.......we have a wood burning stove that we use in the winter......the smell I was noticing then, I thought might have been due to the starter sticks and bricks, we use to get the fire going.....maybe some of that was getting trapped in the flue and it just needed cleaned out....but I must admit, I didn't notice it again.....

So fast forward 4 to 5 months to yesterday, there was that smell.....its just weird, Its like its in my nasal cavity, and I just notice it all day......And of course you know how we do, you start looking at anything that might be different in your environment etc......And then I start thinking if its the machine.....that's why I ask if there is anyone out there that might have had any mechanical issues with their machine that might have caused an order......I will say if its the machine, its not something that causes an order in the room itself, so it may not be that.....I thought I would have my wife put the mask on before I go to bed for a few minutes tonight, to see if she notices anything..

I know its not a cleaning issue....i rinse the hose and mask and tank out with hot water every morning, sometimes i use some d limonene(orange oil) as a cleaning before rinsing out and then i put everything in the hurricane dryer machine to make sure everything gets dryied out well.......

I know this is an odd story, just curious if anyone else has had anything like this happen that was possibly due to the machine......

It could be that the odor is "masked" in the room, but can be detected from the filtered CPAP air. I assume that you already inspected the machine and didn't find it.

This happened to me in a hotel. The entire hotel was declared non-smoking only two years before my stay. I could not smell any smoke; that is not until I put the CPAP on. I believe that the masking scent was eliminated by the filter, leaving me able to smell the smoke.

The only time I have ever had any sort of odor associated with cpap was when I forgot to fill the water chamber and it ran dry during the night and I got a hot plastic smell but it went away pretty much immediately after taking the mask off.

If you are noticing an odor all day long...I doubt it is cpap related.
If it persists and bugs you too much then for sure talk to your doctor about it because there are some medical conditions that cause people to smell weird odors.

Do you smell it only when using the CPAP?

Call your doctor.
If your doctor has no clue, ask for a referral to a specialist.
Lingering "off" smells need to be addressed immediately.
