Difficulty removing hose from APAP

I just completed my first week on APAP. Things seem to be going well thanks to assistance from Pugsy. My Problem: Removing the hose from the machine was very difficult. The soft rubber end of the hose was very difficult to move. I got it off but had to really pull and twist it with some force to do it. I'm afraid that doing this weekly will eventually do some damage to the APAP. Any ideas or tricks to make removal easier?

You should just be able to click it off very easy no force is nessescary... Push on either side and comes right off..

OP is using a DreamStation machine...not ResMed...they use a different hose to humidifier connecting hose.

The end of the hose that connects to the machine has a sort of clip arrangement: squeeze both the pads on the hose end to release it. (I'm making the assumption you also have the heated hose for the humidifier. . . )

However, the other end of the hose, that connects to the mask, is simply a rubber seal. Try this trick that my resp. tech. taught me: grip the hose end in one hand and the mask's connector in the other, palms facing down; now rotate both your wrists so palms face each other (as if you were snapping a twig in two). The rubber seal of the hose should come free of the mask's connector.

If you have the regular hose, though, try a similar technique to release it at the machine end by holding the machine firmly, with humidifier cover closed; grip the hose end and push it to one side (twist the wrist as in the abovenoted technique).

I hope this makes sense! It's harder to describe than actually do.

Edited to correct my assumption on initial composition.

The rubber end of the hose that attaches to the humidifier connection will eventually become less stiff. I don't know of any way to speed up the process.
I assume you aren't using the heated hose and are just using the standard non heated hose that just has the rubber coupling thing.
And yeah, it can be pretty darn snug.

It is not necessary to remove the hose and wash it weekly which is what I assume you are wanting to do because someone told you to do that.
Especially since you are just using passover humidity. The inside of the hose really isn't going to get enough moisture in it to give any bugs a chance to grow.

I never wash my hose.. but that's me.
Once a month washing is more than sufficient if you feel the need to wash it.

Don't feel bad...I needed that second cup of coffee myself because my first response in my head was "just unhook it" and then woke up remembered this person.

He hadn't even been using a humidifier until the other day and he's using the DreamStation and just took delivery of the humidifier a few days ago and this is probably the first attempt to remove the hose to wash it.

Pretty sure a non heated hose because the DreamStation heated hose has something similar to the ResMed heated hose..not exactly the same but close enough.
The only way it would be hard to remove is if it is the standard rubber non heated hose and those can be a bitch sometimes.
I used a non heated hose not long ago to air out a machine that I was sending someone and I had a heck of a time getting it off and I barely slid it on the connection. It was hard to get on and hard to get off.

I don't know of anyway to soften the rubber on the end of the hose that attaches to the humidifier unless maybe some heat of some sort.

You didn't say whether you're using a heated hose (specific for Dream Station CPAPs), or "standard" hose (that will fit almost any CPAP).

If you're using the former, you should be gently pressing the two white release latches on the hose as you remove it. If it's the latter, you might try reversing it (put the mask end on the machine and vice-versa).

Non-heated hoses need to be wiggled to separate.
I learned early on to hold onto the rubber part only--and not the hose itself.

What I do is wiggle the hose side to side, starting gently and working up, if needed, to a more forceful sideways force, and that will start to break the grip the hose has on the plastic nipple.... then it can be worked off.

I hardly ever remove my hose though, and in the months between changes, it gets a pretty good grip.

That's a good point.

I use a little silicon grease. Smear a tiny dab inside the rubber end of the hose, and a little on the plastic connector on the machine. You can find it a pool supply stores and maybe home improvement stores. It has no smell and has not harmed my equipment.
