I feel stupid, can no longer focus and my memory is simply terrible.

Post by M.Caine » Mon Dec 30, 2019 5:53 am

Words don’t come.

I was the guy that came up with the answers. Not anymore.

I feel like people think I’m some kind of fraud, in that I can no longer reproduce or even accurately describe feats from the past. I am challenged in my accomplishments which adds insults to injury as I struggle with my limitations.

I struggle to remember the tasks I’ve done or should be doing.

During conversations I often forget what we were talking about and when asked for my opinion I blurt out very basic answers while completely stumbling when delivering them.

When coding I used to be able to visualize what would happen if I were to take a certain path, now I struggle to even begin see how many paths there are.

I can’t remember much of my days and if I try I always fail.

I’m no longer good at my job and can’t keep up.

I struggle to read and if I want something to be understood I must read it over and over again just to forget what it was all about a few minutes later.

I had an at home sleep study and it revealed that I've had 82 apneas and 103 hypopneas, I’m due to undergo another one but this time at a clinic.

I’m scared and was wondering if these symptoms may or may not be linked to sleep apnea ?

Thank you for your time.

Your home study showed that you stopped breathing 185 times during the night..that's about 23 times an hour (once every2-3 minutes) if you slept 8 hours. Every time you stop breathing you are depriving your heart of oxygen. This definitely can affect brain function...You have "severe: sleep apnea. Follow through with the clinic study

When coding I used to be able to visualize what would happen if I were to take a certain path, now I struggle to even begin see how many paths there are.

I know what that feels like, ended up retiring early as a result(Doctors were convinced my problems were not sleep apnea).
Getting used to sleeping with 'the machine' is a bit of a challenge but it's nothing compared to that feeling of 'losing your mind'.

Your symptoms may or might not be due to sleep apnea, though little doubt your apnea could be contributing to the way you are currently feeling. Might be useful to know your age and family history, especially as relates to cognitive issues. Also, the extent to which you have problems staying awake (and other indicators of apnea) are worth noting.

Particularly important, it's best to see a medical professional(s) about your problems, both as relates to apnea and the potential for there being other reasons for your cognitive decline. Otherwise, you may be in doubt and very concerned regardless of sleep tests.

I am 24 years old, weigh 103kg for a height of 191 cm.

I am the only family member with such cognitive issues and the only who has sleep apnea as well.

I've been to a neurologist who told me my cognitive issues aren't related to sleep apnea, nevertheless when I ask my pneumologist and people who've had sleep apnea, this condition is according to them very much the source of my issues.

I don't know what to do and am very scared for my future, I feel extremely stupid all the livelong day.

This is rough, and one of the hard parts is that you have to be very persistent and determined in your dealings with doctors and tests -- right when you feel you're in cognitive decline. You actually seem to be doing that quite well -- seeing a neurologist and a pulmonary doc, as well as doing a home sleep study and scheduling a clinic study. Still, help is always good. Is there someone -- friend or family? -- you can talk to about all of this and maybe get their assistance? Of course, the people here will also be eager to help as best we can.

What did the neurologist say? Why did he or she rule out apnea as the cause for your difficulties? Was that before or after the home sleep study?

As others have said, what you are experiencing could be fully explained by apnea, or partially, or not at all. But at the moment apnea is the best explanation available, so it'll be good to start treatment as soon as possible and see what happens. When will your clinic study be?

82 Apneas and 103 hypopneas is by definition sleep apnea.
  1. Your overnight lab-based sleep study will confirm.
  2. You'll get a machine.
  3. You may or may struggle with it at first.
  4. You'll get used to it.
  5. In no time at all you'll be as smart as Zonker again.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
I felt much the same--BEFORE cpap.
After several months on cpap, my smarts improved enough so my BOSS noticed it.
It may not all come back, but I feel less impaired than I once was.

Try a different neurologist. I had one eye doctor say my hazy vision was in my imagination, basically; then a second doctor a few weeks later said, "Oh, you have cataracts."

Nobody around me believes me...

According to him such low AHI couldn't possibly alter someone's cognitive functions. Here are my results if you wish to form an opinion on them - https://i.postimg.cc/Gp0ZJjmx/apnee-new.jpg

The sleep study at the clinic is due for the 9th of January, all my hope rests on this appointment.

If the neurologist said your symptoms are not related to sleep apnea - then what did he say? Did he order testing, such as a Brain MRI to rule out a physical, medical cause? Have you been to a general doctor for overall check-up? In addition to sleep apnea, maybe something else is also going on.

Sounds like you'll be getting a CPAP machine, stick around here & people will help you optimize your therapy. Once things are going well with that at least some of your symptoms will lessen, and hopefully go away completely.

Hang in there, there is hope!

Time to find a less stupid neurologist.

You're *not sleeping* with bad apnea such as yours... chronic lack of sleep = inability to focus and remember things. basic medicine.

Folks respond differently to apnea. Hard to tell how much of your symptoms could be due to sleep apnea. It's great that you are being proactive re a sleep test and know that you will aggressively move forward to establish a successful treatment regimen. Re other factors..I think you are too young for manifestations of a heritable dementia.

Treat your apnea and consider meeting with a specialist who can qualitatively and quantitatively assess cognitive function.
