Warm sweaty nose/lips from pillows - suggestions?

Post by cpap450 » Fri Dec 13, 2019 5:39 pm

I'm one month into CPAP now and the adaptation has gone very well.

I slept great before, and sleep great now. But my wife appreciates that I don't snore, so that constitutes an improvement.

My main current complaint is that, although I have about the most-minimal face covering I could want - under-nose pillows - if I wake up in the middle of the night, which I often do, my upper lip and nose - the parts touched by the pillows - are warmer than I like, and mildly sweaty.

Even if I remove the mask and wash my face with cold water, then dry it, the relief ends when I put the mask on, and as a newbie, I want my seven hours in the mask. But rest assured, the first moment I wake after seven hours, I take the mask off for facial relief.

Any easy suggestions I could use to improve this?

For what it's worth, it's winter where I am, and the nighttime temperature in the bedroom is in the low 60s. So it's not like I have too much heat.

Do you have the heated hose.
If so, maybe turn the temp. down.

All I got.

You might try turning the humidity setting down 1.

Are you using a heated hose? If so, try turning the hose air temp down a few degrees.

Consider maybe adding a barrel cozy...the material is extremely soft and feels really good against the skin and could absorb some of the sweat. Overall might make things less annoying.

Thank you for the helpful suggestions.

I don't have a heated hose. My humidity has always been on 4, so I clicked it down to 3 and will see what happens.

The night that triggered this post, I'd been to a party and ate and drank too much, and I think that contributed to my being unable to sleep once I woke after a few hours - I'd actually "tested" the CPAP before, by overeating or having a few glasses of wine, and it never affected my sleep. Not a big deal because I rarely normally do either.

Guessing the small humidity adjustment will make a noticeable difference, so, again, thanks.

I don't have a heated hose.
Are you sure? Heated hose is standard equipment on the AirSense 10 Autoset.

Unfortunately it's not standard.
ResMed has a product code for the entire package that means a non heated slimline hose is included.
They also have a different product code for the entire package that means a heated hose is included.
Meaning DMEs can buy the wholesale package either way.
It's an internal product code used for ordering ResMed products. I had the list handy but can't find it at the moment.
Trust me on this one.
They have similar differing codes for a complete mask package vs a piece or two pieces of a mask package. Lots of options when ordering stuff.

Thanks for more helpful information.

Although I don't know for sure what kind of hose I have, the unit does have an air temperature setting I'd ignored (climate settings were on auto). So I set it to manual and dialed the temp down from 81 to 70. Might be some trial and error involved.

If you have a hose temperature setting available on the screen....you are using a heated hose.
If you were using a non heated hose there would be no temperature setting available. All you would get is a humidity setting number.

If it has a air temp setting, then it's a heated hose.

What does the end of the hose at the machine look like?, Straight or right angled?

If the hose isn't heated I would attribute it to drinking alcohol. The metabolism definitely changes when drunk.

The dialing humidity down from 4 to 3, and the temperature down from 81 to 70, did the trick. Far far more comfortable last night. Thanks again.
