Is there a mouthguard that blocks mouth-breathing?

Post by jumbojorbs » Mon May 20, 2019 1:49 pm

Problem: I need a way to block airflow through my mouth when I sleep. So far chinstraps and tape have been ineffective.

Question: Is there a mouthguard out there that prohibits airflow through the mouth when worn?

Background: I have a full beard and an overbite. So chin straps and tape have not been working very well for me (i.e., they slip off in the middle of the night). A FFM leaks once the pressure gets up high enough so I have found my best luck is using nasal pillows (specifically ResMed AirFit P10). My biggest challenge is that I am a mouth-breather, so it is rendering the CPAP therapy pretty much useless until I can figure out a way to keep my mouth shut during the night. Thank you in advance.

Soft foam cervical collar.
2" micro tape over mouth cheek to cheek.
2" band of elastic with velcro on ends across mouth (cut to proper length for you).

Works very well for me.
I don't try to cut off all leakage, just restrict it to below large leak territory.
Good luck,
JPB

Poli grip strips, cut then placed between lips, leaving a half inch in the middle.
Or chin up strips, bulldog style.

Some have had good luck with a double sided boil and bite mouth guard, you do want the kind that does *not* have a breathing hole in the middle, or, plug that with something if it does... (I'd use some of the extra material that squishes out when you fit the guard.)

I am experimenting with the Fischer Paykel oracle "mask".

It is an oral mask, for those who cannot breathe through their nose. I have re-purposed it.

It seals well around the mouth, with one flap of silicone between teeth and lips, and one flap over the outside of the mouth. I have tape over the vents and the end of the tube. I couldn't find a 22mm cork in the CPAP drawer. (Although I will be looking for one!)

It is easier to remove than tape, creates less heat than a cervical collar, and I don't use the headgear, so no headgear.

I have only used it all night one night, due to other things going on, but I will be pulling it out again tonight.

If I could find a y- joint, I could hook it in with my bleeps and make a hybrid mask.

A Bleep with a mouth mask sounds like a dream.

If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!
