OT: virus test shortage
Somebody finally spilled the beans about why the US has so few virus test kits.
Some IDIOT made the decision to only allow American-made tests.
The rest of the world is using German-made test kits,
US companies cannot produce enough--but Germany can, and DOES.
Sacrificing lives to protect one small local industry is wrong beyond measure.

Test kits don't cure anyone, If I'm sick with the Flu I'll be the first to know about it and act accordingly on it. Meanwhile I will act accordingly to keep my family well and safe, if everyone would do that the spread would be less.. Jim

Re: OT: virus test shortage
True, knowing or not knowing will make little difference to most affected individuals,
especially in mild cases, but if we want effective treatment and a chance for a vaccine,
it could help to identify people who have/will have the antibodies.
This can only work when there are enough tests to find these subjects.
It is not about "you" and "me", but EVERYBODY.

Re: OT: virus test shortage
What is needed in testing is a test that is useful with a low false pos rate, easy to do, preferably self done. (So not to put others at risk) and affordable, (Cost verse Good).
It would also be nice to use our assets in our home country... Has this not taught us anything, most of this is caused, or made worse, because we have given away our ability to manufacture goods in this country!
The New World Order is not Your Friend. Neither is the Stock Market, or World Banking, Ect, Ect, Ect,,,, Jim
True this is a terrible thing, and if the World Wasn't trying to engineer a better weapon out of nature to kill each other. maybe the World would be a safer place to live.
(See Lyme disease, and dozens of others, that have slipped out in the Wild, to the population) Funded by our governments.

In my opinion and from what I've read, you need a test kit that will specifically test for what you are looking for. It also takes some time to gear-up manufacturing to get the quantities that you need. We also don't know if there's a "shelf life" on these types of kits that would render them ineffective if they were sitting around in warehouses for years waiting for a pandemic to hit.

Thanks for posting this, I two have seen the reasons for why we need to make tests that are actually worthwhile, but didn't have the links.
I just see something, weight it out to see if it makes sense to me. I don't think about saving it for others, usually it will only fall on deaf ears, minds are quickly set, and seldom changed. Sharing True Knowledge, is seldom taken well, it's always a subject for a debate, often not for the better. A Jar Full of Opinions, is often Cracked

Identifying cases is not best used for trrearment, it's to limit *spread*. Identifying people who have it with a mild case or before symptoms present that are spreading it around.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Sat Mar 21, 2020 10:54 amTrue, knowing or not knowing will make little difference to most affected individuals,

However, antibodies from early survivors helped save many ebola patients.palerider wrote: ↑Sat Mar 21, 2020 1:34 pmIdentifying cases is not best used for trrearment, it's to limit *spread*. You can't even trust the countries and governments (like we ever could).
Now we've got France stealing stuff heading for British hospitals.

Re: OT: virus test shortage
I'm in Saskatchewan,Canada and luckily so far we have minimal confirmed cases. We have around 30 confirmed cases today and they've ran about 4000 tests.
Re: OT: virus test shortage
Perhaps, and we can always hope, but at this point there's 91,681 people considered "recovered" and nothing promising on the horizon, so limiting spread is the best hope we have at present.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Sat Mar 21, 2020 1:41 pmHowever, antibodies from early survivors helped save many ebola patients.palerider wrote: ↑Sat Mar 21, 2020 1:34 pmIdentifying cases is not best used for trrearment, it's to limit *spread*. Re: OT: virus test shortage
This makes sense, but I wonder how useful it is for people who are not likely tp have been exposed. People are panicking and want to get tested, but unless they go home afterward and have no contact with anybody or anything, they could easily get exposed the next day or the next day. We can't test everybody every day, and our status could easily change. I go back to work tomorrow after 3 weeks of vacation. I work in a grocery store. I could easily be exposed any day. But there is no way to check every day. The best I can do is check my temp.palerider wrote: ↑Sat Mar 21, 2020 1:34 pmIdentifying cases is not best used for trrearment, it's to limit *spread*.
