Nasal irritation from silicone

Post by Tweety71 » Sun Nov 06, 2022 2:09 am

Hi everyone! I'm a new cpap user and am in need of a little help/advice from those of you who have been using it for a while. I use the resmed aircurve 10 with the P10 mask. The mask itself is very comfortable and I have fewer leaks and 'events' with it than I had with my first mask. I've had to get some mask liners due to irritation from the silicone on my skin. Unfortunately the liners don't cover the 'nose buds' and the inside of my nostrils feel like they are burning. I was wondering if anyone could offer a solution for this problem. I already use Cann-Ease to relieve the irritation, but I'd rather just prevent it if possible. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

What size pillows are you using?

Only the very tippy-tip of the pillows should be inside the nostrils. In other words, the pillows should rest against your nostrils. Sometimes the problem you are describing is caused by people having too much of the pillow itself inside the nostril. One fix is to go up a size in pillow. That can help prevent too much of the pillow from going inside the nose.

Another thing to check is the humidity level. If your humidifier is not set at its maximum setting, try turning it up a notch.

I hope you are not trying to put the buds inside your nose...they go under the nose.

The P10 should sit just inside the nostrils so they expand when you turn on the machine. Here is a link to a video showing how to wear them. For irritation some of us use Lanisoh, but Cann-Ease is just as effective.

welcome to the zoo!

may i suggest using a slight dab of lansinoh directly on the pillows themselves? it's a cream used by nursing mothers to sooth sore nipples. putting it on the p10 pillows should cause a barrier twixt your tender nose and the pillows.

this lanolin cream can be found in the infant care section of your grocery or drug store.

good luck!

Does it help when counting sheep to smell them as they pass?
I've used lanolin before, but never so close to my nose. Cann-ease claims to be odorless.

I don’t use enough to smell it but funny question. 🤓

Thanks everyone for all the advice/suggestions. I got a tube of lanisoh and it did help some. But I also researched other masks and have called my RT to request a different one. I'll eventually find the right one.

Hello again. I wanted to let you know that I took your advice on trying a different size pillow. I started out with the extra small (what my RT suggested) and now I've worked my way up to the medium size. Last night was my first night using the medium. I slept better and my nose has no irritation at all. So, thank you so much for the very helpful advice. Now I just need to convince my supplier/insurance that I'm finally done making changes 😂

Lanolin is always purified before sold for human use.
Lansinoh is odorless.
As it comes directly from the sheep, you do not want to be downwind.
It still works, but sheep are little stinkers.

it smells for like a minute when you first put it on, if that, then dissipates.

Just ordered more so i can use what I have on my hands and major improvements when i use the lanolin and some regular handcream concurrently.

ymmv

I smell nothing with Lansinoh.
But I have been around sheep.
At the fair, the kids get them pretty clean;
but I have seen the big bags of freshly sheared wool in the barn.
Funky!

Watched sheep shearing clip on youtube recently and found intriguing. I find the wool to be irritating but love how it keeps my mask from leaking. I went ahead and ordered the big ol tub of it anyway because my skin dries so much in the winter that it’s unbearable at times. Plus I have other health issue that will mean itching can become unbearable ( could have been my problem last winter but I was undiagnosed.

The only frog smell I recall is from 8th grade biology and it was all formaldehyde. yuk!

Sorry- I hope none of them were your kin. 🤓
