Shingles Vaccine and mask sensitivity

Post by robin14559 » Wed Nov 15, 2023 10:57 am

Just checking to see if anyone else has experienced what I am going through... Have had a CPAP for almost 20 years. Never any issues. I got the first of the two shingles vaccine shots and all of the sudden I wake up every morning with a red rash where my mask touches my face. Full mask shape red and swollen. I use a So-Clean 2 daily and am diligent about keeping it clean, but went through and did a full deep clean just to make sure. Changed all of the filters in the Resmed unit as well as the So-Clean. Even changed out the mask and hose to be certain. No change.

Like I said, seeing if anyone else has experienced this and if so how long it lasted.

1. SoClean is a scam. It doesn't clean anything. It voids the manufacturers' machine warranties. It won't clean your mask.

2. Allergic reactions to Shingrix are rare. What time of day did you have the vaccine? If you didn't get the rash until the next morning, it would be even rarer to have a connection to the vaccine. However, very rare things still happen.

I've had both doses of Shingrix, no issues except for a sore arm.

As others have stated, toss the SoClean in the trash and be done with it. The ozone generated by this machine will damage the internals of your machine. Sure, it kills bacteria and other microbes, but it also eats plastic, rubber, and foam over time.

I don't see how the SoClean could have caused your face irritation though. You don't use the ozone generator (speaking of which, I just had to order a new ozone generator for my hot tub, not here yet) while wearing the mask and ozone wouldn't be 'sticking' to your mask and effecting your face.

You're right, some never do.

Like your post above. Have you not leaned that it's not good practice to reply in such a way? Why put the OP on the defense RIGHT OFF THE BAT? Perhaps the OP has never heard of the bad things that SoClean can do to a machine?

What does the amount of time the OP has been using a cpap have to do with it?

How long has it been known that SoClean is dangerous?

I started cpap in May 2009.....it was known then that SoClean was potentially dangerous/harmful to the human as well as the equipment.

Unless someone bought an SC, and must be "RIGHT", whatever the cost!

I know when I got the shingles vaccine I made a promise that any other vaccines I will get on a Mon. or Tue.

I got mine on a Fri. and got all kinds of info to call here or there if I had any reaction. Besides feeling like I was gonna die - I had a fever and backache like the flu, etc.

Well it turns out those places to call are ALL closed on weekends. The VA and the Center for Disease Control in Atl. all closed.

It lasted about 2.5 - 3 days. One doc told me my body was doing what it was supposed to.

So robin is it possible your face/body got extra sensitive after the injection?

I had a co-worker at an old job who used a pap machine for many years. He was clearly embarrassed about it and only mentioned it after I was talking about mine. He got it from his sleep doctor listened to what the doctor said and never did any research on his own. He had no clue about the recall and I' sure would have had no clue about so (no) clean machines had the subject ever come up. If you're not internet savvy and have don't pay attention to medical news then how would you know about this stuff ?

Well.... "you are screwed" comes to my mind.

You do rescue animals if I remember right...dogs??
So do I. Some are dumped and some are unwanted and I get them from shelters or some have health issues that need special care. The most recent addition a couple of months ago was a 16 year old humongous Tennessee Walker horse. Beautiful horse and sweet, sweet horse but lame in the hip.

It breaks my heart but the hardest lesson I have ever had to learn was the "you can't save them all" lesson.
And it's not just the animals.
I have had to adopt the same mantra when it comes to humans. I can't save them all.

I was involved in rescue. Not a whole lot since I had to go back to work in 2020. We adopted a rescue pup earlier this year and just keeping up with him and my two old girls is enough for right now. Some days it feels like I'm barely keeping afloat. It hit me last week that its pups first christmas and I'm going to have to figure out how to decorate in a way he won't destroy it all while I'm at work. 🤦‍♀️

My comment wasn't so much about saving someone from themselves more just answering how someone can be on pap and not know about this stuff. I am constantly amazed at the amount of people who don't question their doctors.

I started using a cpap in 2010 and while I never even thought about using a SoClean, I didn't know about the dangers till I joined this forum in 2012.

I have a rare permanent form of shingles, and it comes and goes. I have it under my left eye near my nose, and the mask irritates it. This flare up is entering its third month due to this. I have moved to another room so my snoring doesn't bother my husband.
As I have this rare condition, I cannot take the shingles vaccine. Sigh.
