New ResMed full face mask....the F40

Post by Pugsy » Fri Mar 08, 2024 10:11 am

Just got an email notice about this new ResMed full face mask being available. The F40.
Now I don't use a full face mask and haven't tried one recently and I have no desire to but just wanted to let you all know about it.
It looks to be similar to the F30.
Various sizing options available for both cushion size and headgear size.
It does utilize magnetic clips for securing the headgear. So if someone has some sort of device implanted in their upper body....might want to check on using it....check with your doctor. Though I would assume it shouldn't impact devices now since everyone knows about the warnings that come with magnetic clips or whatever. As long as the magnet doesn't/can't reach the implanted device there shouldn't be a problem.

I have no idea if it fixes any problems that some people had with the F30 but might be worth trying if someone has a yearning to try something new along these lines.

Of course ResMed wants to tout it as the next greatest thing since sliced bread and only time will tell how well it actually does for full face mask users.

What is interesting is under the support documents for the F40, it says to tell Airsense 10 and 11 it's a pillows mask instead of a full face mask: https://support.resmed.com/en-us/masks/airfit-f40/.

I've found the F30 to be the most successful mask for me so far, but it has short comings I hope the F40 will address, so I've ordered one.

Hi Pugsy,

Looks like it might be my next step. :)

For the last five years or so, I've been alternating between the AirFit f20 and the AirTouch f20 .... and both were ok and did the biz.

But lately, as the minimal pressure I need has increased with age – and the resistance to sideways movement on my facial skin has creased, with age – both the existing f20 variants have been sliding about – to the extent that, by breakfast, the upper corner of either cushion has been poking me in the eye, the left eye.

The product pictures for this f40 clearly show the cushion avoids the eye area by a clear margin. I will call ResMed UK Monday and find out when this new mask will be available in the UK.

Thanks for the advisory. :D

Hey Rick, you should also look at the Resmed F30 and F&P Evora, which are available now. Similar way of sealing on the face as what the F40 looks like - instead of going over the nose, it seals onto the nostrils like a nose pillow mask, while also giving something over the mouth to let you mouth breath if need be.

My biggest pain point (literally) is the silicone pushing on my columella causes it to sometimes get sore if the mask is too tight. That being said, being a smaller foot print on the face means it doesn't have the leverage to shift around as much for me, so while the F20 can slip or twist while side sleeping, I found the F30 and Evora doesn't want to move nearly as much during the night so the two have been the most successful in my case.

I am hopeful the F40 will be a better fit.

I think I read that instead of having one frame/headgear size x 3 cushion sizes (simple enough) like the Amara View or F30, the F40 is going to have 3 headgear/frame sizes x 3 cushion sizes. Is that going to be confusing for consumers and create a lot returns for DMEs as consumers experiment with sizing for best fit?

The F40 cushion looks maybe a little smaller (less facial contact area) than the F30 but I think Resmed is going to really have to work on differentiating it from the F30/Evora FF/Amara View. Or would the F40 replace the F30?

I'm always looking for a "better" full face mask. I have used the Evora since shortly after it came out. I will check with my local DME on Monday to see if they have it in stock, yet.

Doesn't look good. They don't have it in stock, and the person I talked to said she didn't know if they would stock it or not. I'll check again next week. If they decide not to carry it, I will order on line.

Well, they say that it's good for side sleepers and facial hair. Might be worth a try once I've seen a review or two that verifies these claims *smile*.

Hi. Would you please share what the "Shortcomings" are that you experienced with the F30?

Thanks.

The biggest is it can ride up a bit, which can increase the pressure on the columella for me as well as bring the lower edge of the mask closer to my lips which makes it a touch easier to leak if my jaw fully relaxes and opens. A Pad-a-cheek chin strap has been helping on that front, but I'd like to not need to add extra straps if I can.

The F30 Medium is also not a perfect fit on my face, and I am hopeful that the F40 will be a better overall face fit.

Confusing page. The top half of the page shows an under-the-nose FFM, the bottom half over-the-nose. I believe the second half of the page is in error.

Yep, the transparent plastic "over the nose" one is bogus...almost bought the F40 with 25% off coupon, but they're out of stock on the medium cushion, standard frame, so guess I'm waiting.

The ResMed doc only refers to Large, Standard, and Small frame sizes, so there you go. No "Medium" frame size that cpap.com refers to.

Got the F40 in so here are some day before images. Gallery: https://imgur.com/a/LeNOoJP

Fitting it, the mask does conform better with my face compared to the F30, being completely silicon. I can also understand why this recommends the use of Pillows mode instead of Full Face mode on the CPAP machine.

Will let you know tomorrow how it goes using it.

Ok first night results. Firstly, I developed a head/chest cold yesterday, so was dealing with that overnight as well, fun times. I also did not use any of the Pad-a-cheek straps I gotten used to to evaluate the mask on its own.

First night fit initially felt the same as wearing the F30 for the first time, I had woken up to minor leaks (nothing really over 14L/m) and would adjust the straps accordingly by the morning, the leaks were minimized.

Secondly, something I now realize is quite different compared to the F20, F30, Evora and F&P Vitera for a full face mask; since the entire mask part is stiff silicon instead of polycarbonate, the pressure of the mask is more even across the face. If I tightened the F20 or F30 in the wrong way, there would be pressure points as I pushed the poly carbonate closer in some spots. With the F40, it remained even and when I got rid of the leak, it felt evenly tight.

I don't know how I feel about the offset upper straps compared to an adjustable top strap. I do feel less like Hanabal Lector with the strap coverage, but two upper adjustment points compared to three seems like a step backwards.

That being said, even after full tightness, no columella soreness at all.

One other interesting point and that is cleaning/rinsing the mask - unlike every other face mask I've tried, this one has internal nooks and crannies (see the two silicon tabs that hold it in the frame on https://i.imgur.com/t0XuHlA.jpeg). This means unlike the other masks which was a quickish rinse and clean with soapy water and a sponge, you have to have a bit more care to clean out the nooks and inner bits. However, being silicon all the way, it's quite flexible and not hard to do.

I do think this will replace the F30 for me for the time being. Time will tell how it fares long term; being all silicon, I worry a bit it may break down a bit quicker compared to masks where the body is PC, but, I've only been at this since end of January, so I've not worn out any mask yet.
