OK hard headed I guess still have AHI question

Post by ddpelp » Wed Apr 11, 2007 8:31 am

I asked before and got a couple replies but in reading th info and looking at the LCD I am still confused as to what AHI means.

I have a RemStar Auto M series CPAP. On my AHI LCD screen the AHI screen today (new mask) says 1.1 AHI.

I know this is an average of hypo and regular apneas but does the 1.1 mean the machine reacted to and took care of 1.1 apneas or does it mean it missed 1.1 apneas? I guess what I am confused about is the fact that the machine is suppose to prevent apneas right? If so then maybe the 1.1 does mean it missed 1.1

also, is the 1.1 for the entire session or per hour?

I have the software and reader ordered but not here as yet..

I have the M series Pro, but not the auto, but I can tell you for the regular CPAP, an AHI of 1.1 means that you have an average of 1.1 apnea/hypopnea events each hour that were not treated. If they had been treated, they wouldn't show on the screen. Again, this is the CPAP machine. I would think in the case of AHI, the APAP AHI would mean the same thing, but I'm not sure.

WearyOne is right. It is telling the average number of events that got through the treatment. It is an average based upon the amount for the session recorded. For example if you slept six hours and had an AHI 1.1, then you had 6.6 events. They could of occurred evenly over the recording period 1.1 per hour or could have occured all in a single hour. It is an average so the only thing you really know is the number of occurences (AHI multiplied by the number of hours recorded). Anything below 5 AHI is considered normal. In other words people who do not have Apnea average 5 or less AHI.

I don't know what you tested at, but for example if you had 25 AHI untreated and have 1.1 AHI treated. Then the therapy is preventing an average of 23.9 events per hour.

I am not sure about the readout for your machine, but you should also be able to access the AI average and HI average. The two added together equals the AHI. AI records the actual events where breathing stopped and the HI records when breathing was just restricted.

Hope this helps.

Perfect thanks. That helps as I sure was not sure.. I changed masks and maybe it means the new mask is doing beter as I have never seen a 1.1 always been 2.3 to 3.3 So based on a sample of one night <g> it appears the machine reacted better at 1.1 version 2.3 or 3.3 I did notice my leak rate is down as well.
anyway appreciate the info and replies

AND: It's the lower leak rate that allowed your AHI to be lower, the higher the leak rate the more apnea is not sucessfully treated. Jim

now here is the interesting part.. still only based on one night.. The lower AHI and leak rate is with a new mask my doctor's sleep tech was all excited and wanted me to try is the Soyala FF mask. I had the UMFF b4 and will try this a while they are real good at the sleep lab of making sure the mask works well she said even the night (sleep test) techs are wanting the soyala maks during a person's sleep test as they are getting much less leakage.. anyway first night does not prove it but early results looks good huh
