Question on Comfortlite 2 mask.

Post by Guest » Wed Apr 25, 2007 2:58 pm

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea back in March and finally got my mask last week. The mask I used for my sleep study was a Respironics Optilife but when I went to pick up my equipment, they were out of the Optilife. I decided to try the Comfortlife 2 after reading so many good reviews about it. It came with a small Nasal Pillow and a Direct Seal nose piece. I tried the Direct Seal the first night since it was already on the mask, but it leak real bad and so I switched to the small Nasal Pillow. It worked better but I still have a few air leaks. I was wondering what attachments the mask was suppose to come with. I thought I read somewhere that it was suppose to come with a couple sizes of the Nasal Pillows, a couple sizes of the Soft Cushion, and the Direct Seal. Please let me know so I can call my DME back up to get the rest.

Mine came with a medium and large nasal pillows, and medium and large direct seal nose piece. I use the large nasal pillows with pretty good success. I have read that the larger nasal pillows give fewer leaks. I have never gotten the direct seal nosepiece to work without leaks, but I figured that was due to my moustache.

Just switched to the Comfortlife 2 also... The DME rep just left my house minutes ago. I found that, dealing with the DME (at least mine), you do not get all the options you get ordering from CPAP.com. The DME just tries a piece for size and that's what you get. To some degree I understand that it is wasteful to have pieces you will never use, but, being new at this, I am not sure I can tell on a 1 minute trial, up and awake, if the size will fit in the long run... I trusted my DME rep she knew what she was doing... future will tell...
Good luck

Xian
PS: switched to comfortlife 2 from the Puritan Bennett Breeze (was too flimsy, parts came coming off!)

I believe the mask is only sold in two options, small-medium; medium-large sizes.

Respironics website or some retail websites (cpap.com) should have the info

Your interface should have come with a couple of different sizes. Call your DME back and get resized. I have the CL@ and have been happy with it so far. ON thing I found is don't overtighten the straps (if you have marks on your forehead, it is probably too tight.) I have also found that to eliminate leaks the best adjustment in the little screw thing right in front of your nose; it will snug the pillows right up. Hope this helps!

First night with my new Comfortlite 2... Not a good night! Not only did I use a new mask, but my pressure was taken from 8 to 10... Too many changes at the time, I guess...

Also, I have the medium size interface (nose pillows) and they were too wide for me, so I had to push the mask way up to prevent leakage... Very uncomfortable and I woke up an hour after falling asleep, suffocating...

The couple of things I want to share (based on my late night tweaking of the mask and going through old postings on the subjects) are:

The nose pillow can be adjusted by binding the metal strip under it. The space between the pillows can be made narrower that way, which helped me a lot! Also, seems like the angle can also be modified.

Not sure about you, but I had some leakage at the point where the interface meets the rest of the mask (where you insert and turn the interface to lock it into place). The air was going towards my eyes. It seems like that problem can be solved using plumber teflon tape! (as per old postings). I will try this tonight, hopefully.

Hopefully, things went well with you, but if not, I hope this helps!

Last night I decided to try some adjusting on my CL2 before going to sleep. Even though it has the small nose pillow and I think I need the medium, I sat in bed with the mask on my head and used a hand mirror to see how the pillows were fitting in my nares. I adjusted the thing between your eyes that tilts it all the way out bringing the pillow closer to my nose and adjusted the pillows by bending the metal strips like Xian said. I woke up several times during the night to go to the bathroom and noticed it was not leaking any longer. So I learned that it is all about tweaking and adjusting until you get it to fit.

Here is a link to some additional interesting discussions about the ComfortLite 2. Some of the first posts have pictures of "fixes" people have come up with to tweak the mask to suit them.

mine came with the med. and large nasal pillows, direct seal pillow and sm. and med. simple cushion, both of which i've had no success with

I had a bad experience at my DME - the "tech" had no idea how to fit the CL2 mask. Fist night I woke up with a very sore nose. I downloaded this info and have tweaked the nasal pillows per their specs, and am happier.

HOWEVER, I'm continuing to have rainout problems. I sewed up a fleece tube cover last night, and even a small one for the part of the tube on the forehead. I'm wondering if turning off the heat on my humidifier might help. Suggestions welcome.

Cheers,
B.

Oh, and to address the initial poster - the Simple Cushion and me didn't get along. I could only keep it on for about an hour. I tried three nights, and I kept switching after an hour to the nasal pillows.

I really LIKE the idea of the Simple Cushion, it just isn't working for me. Possibly a smaller cushion might work. I got a small-med set of Simple and Nasal Pillows with my CL2. I just ordered a Petite Nasal Pillows, and maybe I'll order a petite Simple, if they make one of those.

And yes, I'm ordering online because my DME is completely lame. Blue Mountain Medical. Don't go there if you can avoid them.

Cheers,
B.

Forgot about this trail, and just started an other one asking for pillow size...

Just wanted to add that the DME told me that, unlike the CPAP superstores, they do not get "packages" and insurance bill for every part of the mask, hence not giving the mask with several size pillows... Still giving me a mask with a pillow that does not work and then telling me they can give me the next size up because my 30 day trial period is up is sop bogus... If you live in the Chicago area, do not go to Sleep RX!!!

Finally, I was considering buying (from my own pocket) the direct seal mask... But I have a goatee/mustache, should I bother?

Thanks

For sale or Trade - Simple Cushion and Nasal Pillows for CL2

Post by Babette » Tue May 01, 2007 10:50 am

If anyone wants to try a Small or Medium Simple Cushion or a Medium Nasal Pillows for the CL2, lemme know. I'm not gonna use them.

Anyone got a Petite Nasal Pillows or Simple Cushion for sale/trade, lemme know.

Cheers,
Barbara

I sense there may be some confusion on the names for the various nasal interfaces for the CL 2:

1. Nasal Pillows: pretty self-explanatory if you know what other nasal pillows might be--these are just made as one silicone piece with the metal T and hard plastic connector added.

Image

This is supposed to be the back of the Direct Seal, but the back of the Nasal Pillows for the CL 2 has the same bendable metal adjustment T:

2. Direct Seal: these are like a stiffer, bellows-free nasal pillow that is supposed to be advanced up to the nares.

The Direct Seal:

3. Simple Cushion: a simple little nasal mask, not too different from the regular nasal mask except that it fits onto the CL 2 headgear with a right-angled tube, which costs a bit more. This may be why the DME providers tend not to dispense this option.

I hope that this dispels any confusion!
