Vision Improvement with CPAP?
Vision Improvement with CPAP?
I am starting a new topic on this to expand the visibility on this because I'm kind of baffled today.
Last night in bed I was reading my book. I do wear prescription glasses for my vision, but I noticed that I found it difficult to read clearly. I took off my glasses, and I found that I could see more clearly and read more easily.
I did some research today and found that sleep apnea can damage your vision. Is it possible that having started CPAP therapy (on my third week now) that vision could improve?
Is this something anyone has heard about or knows about? Today I am working and not wearing my eyeglasses because I can see better without them now. I don't know if it's related to sleep apnea or treatment, but if it's not, it's a strange coincidence.

Re: Vision Improvement with CPAP?
Maybe your glasses got coated with something? If you're referring to glaucoma which can be a factor in serious cases (or possibly others) I would go to my ophthalmologist and not ask us.

Sigh.
I did schedule an appt. with an optometrist today. My question was aimed at wondering if anyone had heard about improved vision after starting CPAP therapy; I'm not asking for a vision diagnosis.

Also, I'm apparently not the only one. I found this after posting. If simple questions are going to met with such hostility, maybe I'm better off checking out another community.

Coming on 13 years now with cpap ....never heard of it affecting vision one way or the other.

Re: Vision Improvement with CPAP?
It makes logical sense to me that the long term oxygen deficiencies many with OSA experience could damage the eyes and there seems to be some literature that makes a connection between OSA and a few ocular issues
https://www.aao.org/eyenet/article/obst ... ist-s-role
That said, my guess would be that any possible damage OSA could have done to your eyes is likely irreversible and I doubt if using a CPAP for 3 weeks could change that. My near vision has also gotten worse since I have been using CPAP and I can no longer wear my glasses which correct for myopia and astigmatism when i read. The cause of my loss of near vision is incredibly common, I’m getting older. It’s good that you have an appointment with your eye doctor perhaps you need a new eye prescription, or maybe your eye doctor can give you some insight into how OSA effects ocular health.
It’s great that you seem to be off to a good start with CPAP, increasing your oxygen levels at night helps with many health issues, I wouldn’t be surprised if it has a positive impact on long term ocular health.

Fat Bruno, I have never heard of this being a result of cpap use, but if it happened to you that's GREAT! I would love to achieve better vision, however it came about. I'm delighted for you.

Re: Vision Improvement with CPAP?
Thanks! It's highly unusual. I keep putting my eyeglasses on, but my vision is worse. I've never had any particularly unusual optical problems. I get a new pair every few years, that's about it. Don't get me wrong. I still need glasses. I have an astigmatism in my right eye, and I definitely need to see better, but for now, the vision in my left eye is very clear without them.
Very odd.

Maybe just a coincidence????
We have a saying around here....correlation doesn't necessarily mean causation.

Re: Vision Improvement with CPAP?
Forget the optometrist.
You need an ophthalmologist.
The optometrist just measures for glasses.
An ophthalmologist is a DOCTOR specializing in eye care.
