What's the longest use of the same machine?

Post by islandboy5150 » Fri Feb 24, 2012 3:18 pm

Just wondering, as I haven't seen a thread on it...yet, what's the longest anyone has used the same machine every night? Five years? Ten? ??? I'm curious as to just what a person can really get out of a machine. Like mileage on a car....

I have two techs that work for me, and one of them has been using the same CPAP machine for 12 years....every night.

I used a Goodnight 418G from May 2001 until Dec 13, 2012. I now use it to blow the dust out of my keyboard of my computer!

I used my first machine 14 years. I only remeber it was a Resperonics black and it was about 15 inches tall. That thing was so loud I needed a fan blowing to drown it out. Only reason I got a new one is because i had a sleep study, my pressure changed and nobody had the took to make the change. Never missed a night and still have not.

I used a Sullivan V for 11 years. When I retired it, the top of the on button was worn off. Never a hiccup and is still working for another today.

Since the technology is ever improving, WHY?

Cpap technology is basically the same now as it was over 20 years ago. Some differences include EPR which helps the user breath out easier, smaller machines that take up less space, Quieter blowers to help promote a quiet sleeping environment, And the ability to track treatment. A pressure of 10 is the same as it always was, just quieter and easier to exhale. There also was no internet to promote new technologies and sleep professionals did not embrace the new fangled ideas.

I'll bet a lot of the earlier blowers are still working today. I suspect the System One and the S9 have each been built to wear out after about five years. Planned obsolescence is a science in itself, today. Making the machine die after a certain time insures a continued need to build newer machines. For instance, they could build a light bulb that lasts forever. But they don't.

I am sure you are 100% correct and there are many longtime users that use the old equipment with no idea of where Cpap technology has gone.

the basic idea of a blower has not changed, but the technology in the machines that went from basic backward vacuum cleaner to the modern automatic machines with exhale relief and self adjusting pressures and sd cards to record everything has most certainly changed in the last 10 years, not even going back 20.

same with tv. the basic idea to watch a picture on tv hasn't changed. but the technology from the old black and white tube tv's to todays plasma hdv with everything certainly has changed.

There was someone on here with over 37,000 hours on their machine. 8 hours every night - that equals almost 13 years. That is amazing!

If I remember right D.H. is still using a machine that was built before CPAP was invented.
It supposedly involves a hand crank blacksmith bellows and a gas mask.
Lots of RERA, I understand.

He might wish to elaborate.

I've been using my Resmed S9 every night for 10 years...don’t see the need to change it anytime soon.
