Why is it necessary to have prescription to buy cpap?
Why is it necessary to have prescription to buy cpap?
Hi,
First post and am an Aussie so hopefully I'm forgiven for my question.
I'm looking for a new cpap machine preferably Resmed but find that to buy in the U.S. a prescription is required, is there anyway around this at all?
I have been using a cpap machine for about the last 9 or 10 years starting off with a S7 autoset spirit + humidifier and now for the last couple of years I have been using the Fisher & Paykel Icon + Auto but I don't like it and want to change back to Resmed.
Cheers,
John

Are you sure that's why a script is required?MastrHiram wrote:I see them on craigslist all the time.

CPAP machines. That's what you're looking for, isn't it? Did I read your post incorrectly? When you posted this, I didn't realize you were still living in Oz. If you can't get a script, your best bet is probably ebay. I found this rather quickly.

Any particular reason for this smartass remark? Cheers.NeedHelp2 wrote:Are you sure that's why a script is required?MastrHiram wrote:I see them on craigslist all the time.

OP asked two questions: Pick one.

Yes, I know, but I figured the one he asked in the OP was the one that he really wanted to be answered. I didn't feel like giving a long dissertation about self-diagnosis and such.chunkyfrog wrote:OP asked two questions: Pick one.

The FDA decided that people might over dose on air and cause harm to themselves. If you watch out you might find a used machine for a reasonable price that can be shipped to you.

Hi and welcome, here are a couple of links to sellers that might be able to help under the circumstances - http://www.secondwindcpap.com/ http://1800cpap.com/cpap-machine-mask-p ... olicy.aspxjohnmw1 wrote:Hi,

Secondwind were helpful to me under similar circumstances.
Re: Why is it necessary to have prescription to buy cpap?
Yes sorry for the confusion, I am most definitely still living in Aussie.
I do have a sleep disorder specialist I see on the very odd occasion but it would be years since I last saw them. Also I do have my data downloaded on a regular basis from the reseller where I bought my last machine and they always go over the info to see what's what and if there is anything of concern.
As far as I can remember we can buy them from anywhere here without a script but at a huge price difference compared to the US, ie for the equivalent Resmed S9 Autoset + Humidifier there would not be much change from $2400.
Will check out Ebay but am always worried about being ripped off?
Cheers,
John

John, your GP should be able to write a script
Re: Why is it necessary to have prescription to buy cpap?
eBay (in N.America anyhow) won't sell without a script as far as I know.

Don't know if it's just coincidence but have read some very poor recommendations re 1800cpap business practices, only here say mind you but............I checked out secondwind and currently they are out of stock of the model I want but will keep looking.
Cheers,
John
