And I find it highly entertaining that I have tried to disagree calmly, I've tried to address some of the points you've made. I have tried to attack the points you've made without ad hominem attacks against you.
I have see a whole lot of Straw-man arguments and even asked you directly to address some things and you simply won't or can't. You accused me of being fooled by the manufacturers and then suggested I shouldn't be listened to.
And for what it's worth, as much as you seem to be suggesting that I take part in "Educating newcomers on proper use of the term BiPAP", I have never once done so.

I'm sorry Dog Slobber. I didn't realize you were actually agreeing with my thread title. I thought you trying to argue against it for some strange reason.
Let's start over, then.
Do you or do you not agree with the thread title, since everything else I have posted was to supply sources and arguments in support of it?
Here are more sources in support of the thread title. Can you be specific about what problems you have with their non-brand-specific usage of the term BiPAP?

Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Resmed makes a bipap--they just don't call it that.
Many consider their version better than the one made by the other guys.
We can call it whatever we like, but we also need to be careful our supplier
does not prevent us from getting the best treatment, whatever it says on the rx.

The point is, in this climate of usage in which non-brand-specific usage of "BiPAP" is so pervasive, even in sellers' ads, why in the world "correct" others when they use the term that way to refer to other brands of machines?

Re: BiPAP as an abbreviation simply means bilevel
I contend that stating "ResMed doesn't make BiPAPs" is MUCH more likely to confuse and mislead and obscure and to give the wrong impression than to educate--unless someone is asking what VPAP means, in which case the clearest answer using common usage in harmony with academia usage might be "it is ResMed's term for bilevel/BPAP/BiPAP."
Agree or disagree. That's fine. That's what forums are for. Well, that and keeping the popcorn industry in business.

I believe you have been behaving poorly towards me and you are not interested in discussion or opinion that differs from yours.
If you truly want to continue discussing this, then I will be more than happy to share what I think of your topic title and your list. But, please recognize that your content within this topic, is a lot more than just "BiPAP as an abbreviation simply means bilevel"

Re: BiPAP as an abbreviation simply means bilevel
So when someone comes here and says the ResMed AirCurve 10 ASV isn't a bipap and they are meaning bilevel ....I am supposed to not correct them? And that did happen within just this past month. Someone told a newbie that the ASV wasn't a bilevel machine.
And it wasn't PR or myself correcting someone for using BiPap in the wrong context. It was someone else giving out incorrect information about how an ASV machine worked. They flat out said the ASV wasn't a bilevel. Which is of course totally incorrect.
Incorrect or misinformation needs to be addressed. Now we can address it gently or with a 2 X 4 but it still needs to be addressed.
As for all the other places using bipap generically...well....the president said that Covid was just like the flu. Doesn't make him right does it? Just because he said it or they do it....doesn't make it technically correct. When it comes to matters of health and the machines we use to maintain our health....I am going to try my best to be technically correct.
I really don't give a rats behind what other places do or say ...... I will use correct medical terminology whenever possible.
Except for when I use the "thingy" and "gadget" or "dodad" because I don't know the correct name or at my advanced age I simply forget the correct terminology.
But I won't (and never have) burned someone at the stake for using bipap generically.
Now I am thinking about creating another voodoo doll whose name will be Jeff and he might get burned at the stake.

damn, that one sorta hits too close to home, given it's 2020.

Re: BiPAP as an abbreviation simply means bilevel
I believe it is ALWAYS useful to help people with concepts and to clarify.
I just don't think people enjoy coming here and being told that they have used the term wrongly when they have actually used the term BiPAP correctly, just not according to manufacturers' trademark battles.
I don't consider manufacturers to be the authority on medical terminology. Yes, their battles have muddied the waters. But if I or anyone else uses terminology the way respected scientists and educators do, I personally don't care what the manufacturers think about it. They don't control academic speech or common (accurate) terminology.
But, hey, I am now convinced that I was totally wrong and off-base and I apologize to the forum as a whole for my time-wasting non-group-think posts. My bad.
It was actually Zonker who made me think I might get away with stating the obvious on the Internet. It's not the first time he has set that kind of trap for me. I have learned my lesson now.
I blame my risky behavior on the acetaminophen.
