24+ yo cpap machine broken

Hey y’all. I’m a handicapped woman who last saw her ENT regarding the CPAP over 24 years ago. I can’t even recall the name of the doc who first prescribed it. In 2020, my mother passed away and at the same time, problems with my sinuses got worse. Because of the lockdown, I couldnt get an apt. for a new cpap and to be honest, I was dealing with too much to add that to my plate. My Dad offered a short term fix though which was to send me home with my Mom's newer and far better machine, a Philips Respironics System 1.

Four years later, and I had totally forgotten that I needed to make an apt. for a new one. I am now mostly homebound (my spine is a trainwreck & I have no cartilage in my knees, shoulders, and elbows.) There is no way I can do an in office sleep study because I have to have my particular set-up or the pain is excruciating & prevents any sleep. Gotta have knees at one level and head tilted to be able to breath. I have horrible sinuses and horrible allergies making breathing difficult.

A month ago, the Philips's Respironics stopped auto turning on and I am spending up to fifteen minutes every night trying to get it to work while having a panic attack because I can't breath. I contacted my primary care physician who sent a prescription to Lincare who has been absolutely worthless in helping us negotiate the bureaucracy of getting a new machine.

So. I have a gazillion questions. Is it possible to bypass the bureaucracy and just order one on the internet? Because I have so many issues, should I go to a full face mask (is that a bi-pap?)? What brand & make should I go with? I am absolutely at a loss here.

If you have a script, you can use it to purchase the machine from an on-line DME, such as our host cpap.com. If money is an issue, you might want to purchase a refurbished machine from secondwindcpap.com. Both of them are reliable on-line DMEs who take good care of their customers, but you will need to buy the machine out-of-pocket. In other words they're not going to take your insurance.

For plain CPAP/APAP machine, folks around here would recommend a Resmed AirSense 10 AutoSet. The Resmed AirSense 11 AutoSet is also highly recommended.

A bi-pap is not a type of mask. A bi-pap is a fancier machine that requires a script for a bi-level PAP machine that has the property that the inhalation pressure (IPAP) and exhalation pressure (EPAP) can be set separately and be further apart than 3cm H2O pressure.

As for mask type: What have you used in the past? Because the perfect mask for person A is the word's worst mask for person B and vice versa.

This model is the only machine I recommend. Of course, there are other suppliers, and you might get lucky and find one cheaper.

Stick around the forum. These guys can help you with nearly anything. If they can't, they will refer you.

I have a "brand new" only 500+ hours AirSense 10 Autoset with a new hose a new chamber and a brand new DreamWisp mask for only 500usd. Comes with bag and everything. Have a brand new Simplus also a bunch of probably 10 minutes used masks. Eson 2, Evora, Airtouch F20 brand new masks all sizes but small, Nova Micro, and a handful more.
