Rainout

Post by ArnieJB » Mon Oct 13, 2014 3:37 pm

I have been using a ResMed S9 Elite for several months and started getting rainout within the last 3 weeks as the weather has turned colder here in the Northeast. I just picked up a ResMed hose cover to prevent this and I STILL got rainout last night. We don't currently have our heat on yet so air temp in the house is getting down to about 63 at night. Is this too cold or should the heated hose and cover take care of this? I am using an Airfit P10 nasal pillow mask.

I assume you do not yet have a Climateline heated hose.

You are forgiven. I use mine year round.

Please see my posts in this thread...I think posts #2 and 3.
Covers pretty much all your options for rain out prevention and control.

But to answer your question...yes..the heated hose would make a huge difference. In the winter my bedroom gets to at least 50 degrees or so...I always turn the thermostat down to 50 and the bedroom has windows north and east sides and is poorly insulated and gets even colder. I prefer lots of humidity to my nose and battled rain out every winter until I got the heated hose. I don't even need a hose cozy now.

Can you get the Climateline easily enough from your supplier and using insurance? If not there are other ways.

At what settings for humidity and air temp and with which mask and where is the rain out...hose/ mask/both?

Rainout was in heated hose, mask hose and mask. I was keeping humidity on 6 and temp on 70. I cranked the temp up to 80 last night. It was a bit warmer outside (20 degrees) than the previous evening, but no rainout last night.

The setting of 6 for humidity with the ClimateLine is the maximum. At that setting you are going to need the hose temp higher as the weather outside starts to cool and bedroom temps cool.
A setting of 6 with temp of 70 degrees...that air just isn't warm enough to retain the moisture so rain out occurs. It's pretty much simple physics. The warmer the air the greater the moisture retaining properties which of course means less chance of rain out.

Now rain out can occur at the mask level sometimes because the moisture in our own exhaled breath mixed in with the air containing high moisture...combined with cooler bedroom temps which cools the mask because the incoming warmer air from the heated hose has cooled a bit during the distance between the heated hose end and the mask (often with a short hose like with nasal pillows) the scales get tipped and rain out in the mask only can occur.
There are ways to limit this problem should it occur and increasing the hose temp to max doesn't fix it.
