Dermiform Tape Substitutes

Post by jeepdoctor » Tue Aug 29, 2006 11:20 am

This is a silk cloth tape produced by Johnson and Johnson. I have had excellent results using it for mouth taping. No redness and good adhesion. However, J&J has stopped making it.

I called around to some medical houses and this is what their folks told me regarding substitute tapes.

1. Medline # NON260102Z. This the # for the 2" tape.

2. McKesson 5181ZL. Width unknown.

3. 3M Durapore#1538-2. Referred to as "silk-like."

4. Kendall Curasilk # 7139.

I found a place that claims to have Dermiform tape in stock. They want $ 20.17 for 6 rolls of 2" by 10 yds. Price includes shipping. I ordered 6 rolls since this is a proven item with me.

PM me if you want to know the medical houses I talked to and their pricing.

I talked to a sales person at a very good pharmacy in our town. He believes that J&J Secure Comfort tape is the closest alternative to Dermiform. The price is $ 4.95 per 2" wide roll. He ordered-in a couple of rolls. I am anxious to try this tape.

Thanks again!
I'm using 3M's Nexcare "Gentle Paper" tape, from tape dispenser. It's 3/4" wide, "for sensitive skin, breathable..." (Hospital name = 3M "micropore" Surgical Tape).
I've had good luck with this. The width is OK, and it's handy to be able to tear off what I need.
...are we the only ones using tape anymore?
I was going to try the glue stick, but...

Some people have to tape their mouths close? I didn't realize this. I was a mouth breather too up until using cpap. I think I'm keeping it closed all night.....how would I know if I'm not? Just by not feeling better? Because I have seen an improvement.

I can think of three ways to find out. 1.) If your partner tells you that you are snoring, 2.) Use an oximeter overnight and look for desats which could indicate that your mouth is open, rendering the therapy ineffective, and 3.) Look at the snore data from your CPAP machine using the smart card data analyzed through software such as Encore Pro.

I forgot to mention --

I used a SPO 7500 pulse oximeter and made two runs. In the first run, I didn't tape my mouth. In the second, I taped. Results were lowest SpO2 93% and average 98% without taping. Lowest SpO2 96% and average 98.7 with taping. It appears that taping made a small improvement in SpO2.

I started taping because I would roll onto my back and snore. A chin strap didn't help. Plus I got tired of having red marks on my face.

NyNurse33,

Other good signs of mouth-breathing include a dry mouth, sore throat and/or flu-like symptoms.

Lots of people here tape their mouths, myself included. I have problems with the tape occasionally coming off, and when it does, I *really* can feel that I've been mouth-breathing!

Has anyone tried the removable blue painters masking tape, by Scotch... it says "for delicate surfaces"?

The green masking tape is better yet -- for painting that is. Don't know how it would work for mouth taping. Ain't about to find out either.

I've been using 2" width 3M Micropore paper first aid tape for quite some time now and am pretty satisfied with it. I know it also sells under the Nexcare brand.

I learned to be very careful to remove the tape s-l-o-w-l-y in the mornings. One morning I got in a bit of a hurry and created a tender spot on my face. That night I just put a very small dab of first aid cream on the spot before taping over it. The tape adhered all around the spot but not on it, and I had no further problems.

I really dislike having to tape up every night but there's just no choice. I finally gave up on my ComfortFull mask yesterday and threw it in the drawer for good -- with extreme prejudice -- so it's either taping up every night or stopping cpap therapy and that's really no choice at all.

Off topic: My spam zapper buttons have been missing for at least a couple of days. If that's part of the overall redesign of the security process here, that's fine. But if I've been tagged as some sort of spamicidal assassin or something, that's incorrect. I'm fairly certain that I haven't zapped any legitimate posts but certainly want to apologize to the good folks at cpaptalk.com if I have. Like everyone else, I'd just like to be able to scan the posts here without having to wade through spam to do it.

I have tried alternatives including the infamous Hybrid. Conclusion: taping works the best. Sure, I wish I could find a mask that would do the trick but I am running out of places to store them leave alone anticipating a debate with the IRS when I try and deduct the cost for all these masks. My educated guess is even when face muscles relax during heavy sleep the tape does not pull away unlike a mask interface which is too inflexible and leaks abound.

Taping wins...

Encore Pro Data Management Software 1.8i

Post by Francis » Sun Sep 16, 2007 12:08 am

Does anyone know where I can purcahse the "Encore Pro Data Management Software 1.8i"?

When I was about to order the "M Series Auto CPAP with A-Flex", I was told that CPAP.com is no longer carrying the software that works with the machine that I wanted.

As a sleep apnea patient for 9 years, I have lost some weight in the past 10 months. But the HMO didn't want to give me another sleep study. I think it will be very helpful for me to know what's going on with my sleep, and the in/out pressure has changed.

Appreciate it if someoen can email me the information to: francis8530@yahoo.com
