Back to the original question of using essential oils to help with congestion or simply because you like the smell of something.
I’m looking for relief from my unidentified but significant nasal congestion.

You are free to try anything that might help. Just don't add anything to the water and I wouldn't add anything that is close to my face that might get inhaled directly without the diffusion of a lot of air. Meaning I wouldn't add something at the mask end that has oils because of the risk of inhaling the oils into the lungs. Lungs and oil don't play nice together. There's a thing called lipid pneumonia that I would want to avoid. I didn't look at what you were wanting to add as to where it might be placed in the circuit but I wouldn't add anything inline in the hose or at mask end.

Adding something at the air intake is much safer...you got filters to go through and there's going to be a lot air movement to diffuse any oils that might be in the vapor which I highly doubt would even happen.
You don't want oils in the water itself. Not sure how much it might even help but again oil and lungs don't play nice together and I wouldn't risk it myself. I hear of people doing it but it's not something I would want to do. If nothing else it would be a nightmare cleaning residual oil out of the plastic chamber and you would have trouble with strength of the aroma. With the cotton ball trick you can move it closer or further away depending on how strong it smells.
I like the Christmas tree smell but sometimes I end up with too much oil on the cotton ball and it's REALLY strong and not pleasant.
When I do that all I have to do is move it further away and go to sleep.
