Distilled Water

Why can’t I just add distilled water to the humidifier tub? Why do I have to discard the water?

Why do you think you can't just add more distilled water? Who told you to discard it?

I top off the distilled water in my tank every night. I have done it for over 15 years. I don't dump the water except on a very, very rare occasion when I decide to clean the water chamber/tank.

If you measure your use, the tank my be empty the next day or near enough.
Clean the tank when empty.
If you are ill, the water may hold what you don't want it to, potentially prolonging illness.
