pushed up nose from pillows deep wrinkle on bridge of nose

Post by lindaberry4 » Sun Nov 16, 2008 5:52 pm

Hi,
I am new, less than a month, to CPAP using. I am having a real problem with finding a mask that is okay for me. As an older woman, 58, I am concerned about making the wrinkles I have worse. I thought I had the mask for me with the resmed liberty with mouth cover and nasal pillows. I am a mouth breather. Everything was great until I realized that the nasal pillows, of course, push the nose up (in a pig type look) This makes the line (wrinkle) accross the bridge of my nose, between the eyes WAY more pronounced and deeper than it was before. I thought I could use medical tape to keep the nose from pushing up and making the wrinkle worse, but that didn't help at all. Has anyone any advice on using nasal pillows, but avoiding the nose push up making the bridge of nose wrinkle more pronounced. This will make me no longer use this mask. It's tough enough getting old, without making my existing wrinkles even more noticeable!!!!!! Any ideas?

Hi. Not sure about this since I am relatively new to this forum but I think MOST masks do the wrinkle thing. I use the Quattro and have the imprint around my nose and cheeks. I also recently gained "saddlebags" under my eyes. If you find one that fits and does not do this, please let me know!

I use Comfortlite 2 and don't get that problem. I'm around your age.

When I began CPAP two years ago with nasal pillows, I wondered about the long term effects of the nightly use on skin lines and size of nares. I posted question here and replies seemed to favor that there are no long-term effects. Not so. I have slowly developed horizontal lines across top of nose. I have used CL2, OptiLife, and now Swift LT. I think the 'pig face' is less with LT. It may be that instead of pulling the nasal pillows tighter and higher to seal, I push it more from below by adjusting the angle of pillows and the angle of how it rests below the nose.

I have fleece covers on the mask straps and the results of this is very smooth supple skin on this area. It may be the result of the skin not being nightly exposed to dry air?? My 58-year old skin looks like 58 years everywhere except under the mask straps.

Perfection seems to be out of reach in a mask but no way do I want to go back to pre-CPAP days!

Hi,

I actually have the RESMED Liberty (small) with nasal pillows (size medium). I am a nose breather so prefer this type of mask. I actually find that I do have to have a fairly snug fit to get the desired effect. I was curious if maybe you have tried to vary the size at all of the pieces. This may actually assit you without "scrunching" the nose to the dreaded "pig position".

I am new to this, so I am not sure of the wrinkles issue but do have lines from the mask in the morning. I have noticed my skin to be dry lately but not sure if this is just due to winter or what!

Best Wishes.

Dear lindaberry4: I also use nose pillows, but never have had "pig nose". I wonder if you have your head gear too tight? If I tighten the one on top of my head too tight, it does pull up on my nose, but I can't sleep with it that tight. Try wearing it a little looser. I am also a mouth breather. A lady on here tol me about Polident denture strips. Take one and wet it, place it on your bottom lip, press your top lip down on it, hold for a minute--"your sealed" It takes a little doing to get it off in the morning though, lots of warm water and rubbing with a rag. I dont like that part so much, but it works..

Hi,

I haven't started using a mask yet but am also concerned about wrinkles! Have you checked out the cloth nasal mask at sleepcpapmask.com? It is all cloth and supposedly leaves no lines. Hopefully, no lines means no additional wrinkling! I plan to order one. Good luck! Karen

Just a thought along the idea of the taping that you described to try to avoid wrinkling the skin, I used to work on a unit where they did a lot of ENT procedures such as Rhinoplasty, for the first week or so post op the patients where a spint on the nose- years ago those splints were made of plaster of paris but these days they are made out of some kind of thermoplastic that softens when placed in hot water and is then moulded over the nose and solidifies as it cools. Podiatrists, OT's and orthotists all use these kinds of plastics - i am not sure where you would access the material but something firmer than the tape may work.

If your skin is wrinkled it is very likely because you don't consume sufficient quantities of either water or omega 3 fats or both. Your skin needs both for healthy elasticity and moisture.

I get marks, sunken in marks, below my nose from my CL2 nasal pillows, but ok with my Breeze,
re the wrinkles - you could try trying a stocking around
your head to hold the tube closer to your face, and thus the nose piece in closer to your head then you may not need to have the pillows hiked up
so high that you get the wrinkly look.
I have to have the Liberty tighter to stop leaks, even then, being a side sleeper, the pillow causes leaks at times, guess I will
have to sleep on the edge of the pillow, not always easy if you move around. good luck
