can mouth taping or chin strapping aggravate tmj?

Post by elena88 » Sun Aug 08, 2010 2:30 pm

I was just wondering if any you experienced any jaw discomfort or aggravated tmj symptoms when you taped your mouth
or used chin straps?

I have TMJ, wear a hard nightguard, tape & use a chinstrap. That's BEFORE I put on my mask.
NOOOOOO, I don't have a problem

The only thing that was a problem was using a nasal mask. It moved my upper incisors backwards so I paid to have them pushed back in place.
The nightguard keeps them in position and protects me from grinding. The chinstrap keeps my jaw from falling back into my throat and the tape keeps my lips from making weird noises.

It's a science, they tell me.

My understanding (though I have NO sources or proof) is that, as far as chin straps, it depends. Some chin straps can supposedly make TMJ worse for some, some chin straps can supposedly make TMJ better for some, and some generally neither help nor hurt. It depends on the strap and the person and the nature of the condition itself.

Now that I reread what I wrote above, I realize that it is worse than no answer at all, since reading the answer leaves the reader with less information than they had before reading it.

Sorry.

Sometimes, when I read I reply I think I understand it, then other times Im not sure I do, however often, I believe I think I understand that
I didnt grasp the idea, but then again, I have a realization that I know I that dont know what Im taking about either.

Hi Elena,

I use a mouth guard and did get a sore jaw/teeth when I used a chinstrap. I use polygrip, no soreness. My main problem is lip flutter, with the continued jaw clench/grind, so the polygrip seems sufficient to keep my mouth closed.

Happy Sleeper

I've found that the full face masks tend to push my lower jaw back. I can never loosen the lower straps enough so that they don't.

I've found as jnk said that SOME chin straps do tend to push our lower jaw back for some of us. So much depends on how the chin strap fits and sets on your head. Some like the PAPCAP or PAPCAP 2 for attaching mask headgear AND chin strap.

i was wondering the same thing as i grind my teeth. funny thing is based on the results of the sleep study i grind when i have an apnea event. have u ever checked your scans to see at which times your grinding your teeth? could it be a response to arouse yourself when you are having an event?
