Sinus problems
I don't know if I have a sinus infection but I'm having lots of sinus discharge. I've cleaned my mask really well. Should I take any extra precautions, including not using my mask tonight? I have a Simplus FFM.
Re: Sinus problems
What setting on the humidifier are you using?
What you are describing could be nasal mucosa reaction to either not enough moisture or too much moisture.
I usually tell people when they complain of similar or allergy like symptoms...play with the humidifier setting.
If using a low setting....try higher.
If using a higher setting...try lower.
If using a middle of the road setting...toss a coin or go with the majority of people and try higher.
Google "Cpap rhinitis"

Re: Sinus problems
Is it clear or yellow? Clear is an indication of allergies or other irritation or a cold. Yellow might indicate an infection that requires antibiotics.Morningglory wrote: sinus discharge

Why? Are you looking for an excuse to NOT use it?Morningglory wrote:I don't know if I have a sinus infection but I'm having lots of sinus discharge. I've cleaned my mask really well. Should I take any extra precautions, including not using my mask tonight? I have a Simplus FFM.
I agree with Pugsy. Try different HH settings.
My sinuses "drain" every morning about 20 minutes after I get up. So, I blow my nose and do some nasal cleansing. It's never been an "infection" and I look at it as a good thing........it keeps my sinuses and nasal passages clear.

Re: Sinus problems
I'm a long term allergy sufferer. And like you, I noticed starting CPAP that I had more discharge. But for me, it's a good thing because it's flowing out of my sinus cavities instead of sitting there to turn into a sinus headache or infection. I think I get more "flow" because I'm using heated humidity, where before I was not.
When my sinuses hurt, steam is one of the first things I do to clear it (among other things depending on severity). So to me it sounds plausible that cpap humidity is loosening the gunk.
Color is key. If it's clear generally its not a problem. Colored mucous doesn't necessarily mean infection, but it can be. Check with a doc if you have colored mucous, they may prescribe antibiotics, antihistamine, or maybe a nasal rinse. Also, for me at least (others may be different) my sinuses feel full and ache if I have a sinus infection. If I lightly tap a finger on my sinuses during a sinus infection, it feels squishy and I get a dull ache.
Also in the AM I'm always more runny (even before cpap) than I am through the day. I would think provided the mask is being washed and the filter/water is clean, you should stay on cpap. I would think if it is a cold or allergies, the filtered air must have less particles than open air.
