He's not very fast! Came in on the Short Bus.
This thread reminds me of that Ad on T.V. "We don't stop Identity Theft, We just Report it! Just as useful. Jim

Re: The Chinese Child is at it Again
I am awake, so I thought I would delete some of the spam, but for the life of me, I can't find a spam button! Do I need to have a certain number of posts first?

While guests are allowed to post and membership is unconstrained, these problems will continue. Once again, watch the spam escalation happen as the spam bots work out how to successfully invade the system. They've done it once and they'll do it again. More importantly, they will have learned from the last episode and will be harder to eradicate.

Creating a script to delete SPAM won't solve the problem... The system resources will be overloaded, crashing the site or overloading the servers. The only answer it to tighten the membership, read only for guests, post limits and or time between posts. Jimthrowaway123817 wrote:It would be possible to automate the process of deleting spam posts. However, it would be much more beneficial to just have proper forum settings in place, such as automated detection of spam for new accounts, and/or limited number of postings for new accounts.
I can look into creating a script, if needed, however, the script would be in bash - so if one wanted to use it they would most likely need to use a mac or linux distro.
Edit: Also, regarding the use of different accounts, is that true? I haven't been here long, but I only witnessed one account spamming: memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=82921
I was under the impression new accounts had to be approved before being allowed to post.
Edit Edit:: Also, google translate seems to have detected the language as Korean, not Chinese.

That mantra has been repeated over & over thru out this forum. And now there are a number of noobs who have come to offer "rules to live by" and many other "how to" suggestions.Goofproof wrote:The only answer it to tighten the membership, read only for guests, post limits and or time between posts. Some CPAPtalkers have been using the spam mechanism to delete posts from others members which they disagree with. These posts often express unpopular or inflammatory views, but are not profane. Beware the person who wishes to legislate the morality and the behavior of his neighbor. Respect the person who accepts as responsibility, duty and sacred privilege the task of successfully moderating his own behavior. People who can do this are rare beacons of light. It is easy to point the finger "elsewhere" and imagine a utopia will result. It is hard to do the work and take responsibility to make your first utopia internal. Paraphrasing Ghandi - be the change you wish to see in the world.

My approach to moderating cpaptalk is well known. Here's the basic rational:

Jim knows this but apparently just doesn't understand it or want to accept it; you be the judge.

You like to be GUEST, but you can't read, I did not say what you said I did, I said that's how you fix the SPAM problem, I realize change isn't embraced here, I also generally don't approve of people coming here and wanting to change the site, however if we don't get this solved we won't have a HERE to come to. In the end it's up to Johnny, it's his $$$ and his site. It would be a shame to lose it, he has already put up with more trouble than I would have, I thank him and Carolyn for that. And to Guest, enjoy reading when you learn how. JimGuest wrote:That mantra has been repeated over & over thru out this forum.
