How to Claim Cost of a New Machine on Insurance??

Post by 95C4 » Tue Mar 29, 2022 7:56 am

I have Medicare & Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan G.
I had to purchase a new CPAP machine because the old one was deteriorating.
From what I have read it may be possible to claim some of the purchase cost against either Medicare or Aetna, or both.
Has anyone gone down that route & can tell me how to go about it?
I am having difficulty finding the appropriate forms & am not sure whether to try Medicare first, then Aetna, depending on what Medicare do, or claim against both at the same time?
Any guidance appreciated.

You have to try to file with Medicare FIRST and then once/if Medicare pays then you can file with your supplement with Aetna which is your supplement to Medicare.
All supplements are tied to when/if Medicare pays first.
Supplements won't pay first and in most cases if Medicare won't pay then the supplement won't pay either.

Medicare doesn't really want patients filing claims themselves and they do make it difficult but there is a way which is outlined briefly on the Medicare website. Sorry I don' thave that link handy but I have seen it.

Where did you get your new machine from?

Pugsy
Thanks for your help.
The insurance companies don't make claiming easy.
I got the new one from Cpap.com.
They had an Aetna Claim Form on their site, but it looks to be a generic claim form.
The machine I had to replace because the motor/bearings had become very noisy, was a recall Philips.
Not sure where that leaves me in the Recall food chain.

That generic or universal claim form that cpap.com offers is what you need to file to Medicare.

Aetna won't pay until/if Medicare pays though.

Not sure how to fill it out for Medicare instead of Aetna though unless you cross out the Aetna stuff.

In digging around further, & in case someone else needs to file on Medicare, I found this site, which links to Form CMS-1490S & that appears to be a form that can be used for DME.

Thanks so much to all who have supplied Medicare insurance claim information. Next time I get a new machine the info will come in handy.

Note what the Medicare site Pugsy linked to says:

"However, you cannot file a claim with Original Medicare for diabetic test strips, Part B drugs, or equipment paid for under the DMEPOS Competitive Bidding Program"

You can check here https://dmecompetitivebid.com/cbic/cbic ... H5O2KFK4HO.
