Comfortable Nasal Pillow Sought

Post by JeffNC » Fri Jan 06, 2023 6:48 am

I'm, new here, so please bear with me.

I use a humidifier-equipped ResMed Airsense 10 Autoset machine with a Fisher & Paykel Brevida mask. My problem is with the nasal pillow design.

I use the extra-small size Fisher-Paykel nasal pillow with small nostril "cones", but it still chafes my nostrils badly. Moreover, these pillows seem to become "mushy" very quickly and don't want to stay sealed to my nose.

My wife uses a Dreamwear mask (model unknown) which has an "open" nasal pillow design without the individual nostril cones. She has worn it for years and has had no problem with chafing, sealing or softening. It would seem to be a more sensible nasal pillow design. Moreover, the hose for the Dreamwear mask is located to the top of the head rather than "in my face" as is the Brevida mask.

My question: can a Dreamwear mask set-up as described above be used with my RedMed machine? One would suppose so, but I want to assume nothing considering the price of this equipment. And, if so, what model mask would it most likely be?

Yes, it will work on your machine. I have used both the Dreamwear & Resmed N30i under the nose cushions. (open pillow as you called them). I prefer the N30i, very comfortable. I also have tried several nasal pillows; Brevida, Dreamwear, P10, & P30i, they all irritate my nostrils.

Still searching for the "right" mask.

Any mask can be used on any standard machine. Brand/style doesn't matter,

If you want something without the nostril cones, try the Wisp nasal mask: https://www.usa.philips.com/healthcare/ ... nasal-mask

Extra-small pillows? Pillows should NOT fit inside the nostril.
Cramming them all the way in is painful!
Jeff might need to try a larger size.
Think of your nostril riding on the upper surface like a tushy on a saddle.

i recommend the P10 which i use. also, try lansinoh. it's used by nursing mothers to relieve sore nipples. sounds like i'm having you on, but no, there is such a thing.

in the infant care aisle of your grocery store.

it also has a slightly tacky feel to it and that helps the pillows adhere to the nose.

good luck!
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Thanks, Chunkyfrog. The Brevida mask originally came with larger nostril cones ("medium" or "large", I can't remember which). They caused even more irritation, and would easily turn inside-out with no help from me just as the current small size does.

Thanks. I already tried it; it didn't change a thing.

Thanks. I think that I want to try something other than the "in your face" hose design; I am a side-sleeper . . . so a top-feed mask would make more sense.

Well, I guess we can file THAT under "Stuff they don't bother to tell you when you buy a CPAP" . . .

Thanks! It makes sense, but I honestly didn't know that for certain.

Have you considered the Bleep, now the Eclipse Halo? No head gear, leak-free, nothing to go into the nose. Yes, there is some prep before bed to apply, but no adjustment during the night (no mask slippage on face, no headgear riding up on head, no airflow into eyes, etc.). It is the only mask I was able to use for more than a few weeks (I went through about 18 masks, tried a few more than once) my first 14 months on CPAP. I've been happily using the Bleep, DreamPorts & Eclipse, for more than 3-1/2 years. It might be worth looking into.
