Sleeping pills and blood pressure issues

Post by Tomandsue » Wed Dec 27, 2023 2:18 pm

When using non-prescription sleeping pills, BP was lower, but now using Doxepin (prescription pills) BP is not as low? I would think prescription sleeping pills would work better. Do you have any ideas that maybe have worked for you? Thanks

You have given us very little information. Which other drugs are you taking? What are the two BP readings you are referring to? Why are you taking Doxepin? Have you been diagnosed with high BP? Have you talked to your doctor about the BP changes?

I have nocturnal hypertension and so I’ve been taking doxepin to help me sleep; however I don’t want to take it long term especially since it’s not really helping much. I take Guanfacine (BP pill) and have been taking Doxepin to sleep better. Thanks

Guanfacine and guanabenz have the same mechanism of action. Guanabenz is listed as may have an interaction with Doxepin. So it would be best to ask your doctor. Or you could discontinue Doxepin since none of the sleep aids work long-term. Some people have withdrawal when Doxepin is discontinued abruptly. A tapering off is needed. Again, better ask your doctor.
