Respiration holes with masks

Post by writes4me » Fri Dec 21, 2007 3:21 pm

I wanted to know if anyone else has had the idea of asking manufacturers to see about putting the breathing (respiration) holes further from the business end of our masks?

I say this because I've noticed that it is those little holes designed for respiration that are a cause of whistling. I wondered if they were able to put the holes elsewhere the noise might not be so noticeable.

I'm sure part of the worry is that we might roll over and cover the holes if they aren't put where they are now, but that arguement doesn't hold up under scrutiney. How many of us roll over anyway and how many times have you found you were laying on the very holes in your mask that were always supposed to be clear?

Anyway, it was my thought. I'm always looking for ways to reduce the noise my machine makes. My husband says it doesn't make a lot of noise but to me it sounds like an asmatic octogenerian's death rattle. Sometimes i'll hold my breath so I don't hear that thing wheezing.

And though I've gone through every mask I can find, I still fear I'll find myself with nostrils the size of a gorilla before I'm through. The tip of my nose keeps getting pulled up and it hurts. But this is the only mask I've found that I can sleep in so I deal with it.

Thanks ya'll for your help.

I'm not a designer but I wou suspect if you put them much further they would not clear the CO2 which is what they are suposed to do.

Mask vent holes

Post by kteague » Fri Dec 21, 2007 11:30 pm

When I had my next-to-the-last titration study I had a mask that kept me awake all night. I sleep on my side with my hand under my face. and the vent blew cold air on my arm all night. when I pulled the sheet over my arm, it made noise flapping the sheet. That's when I realized how important the vent direction could be.

I've been spoiled by my Headrest (TwilightNP, Aura) with it's vent being several inches above the nose and pointing upward, and it's hose going over my head. Not to mention there is no tugging on my nose. With the pantyhose tights straps replacing the headgear, I haven't had a large leak since using it. I do hear the inhale and exhale mask noise more than with the Breeze, but it is much muted once I tie the strap around it to hold it securely (but not painfully) against my nose. I'm eligible for another mask and want to try a FF one, but I'm afraid it's a tough act to follow.
