Mom wont take me seriously- think i need CPAP
Hi I'm Jen, and Im 16 years old, I am overweight and continue to wake up at night, but I'm not sure if its apnea, Do you know if you cant breathe when u sleep? I do snore, and like i said i have these little "episodes" you might call them,. Only thing is, my mom doenst take me seriouslt on these things, what should i do?
Visit a sleep center and have a sleep study done.
Sleep apnea can aflict anyone at any age and weight. My Sleep Disorder doctor told me that some infants suffer from apnea, as do some skinny people. If you have apnea, you may not be able to tell simply because you are waking up. In my case, I was not even aware I had stopped breathing at night, and had 120 apnea episodes an hour. Once in a while, though I would wake up feeling as if I had a nightmare, but not remembering one, so it could be a sign of sleep apnea. What helped me find out if I had sleep apnea? -- I found an quiz in a book or magazine about the typical symptoms of apnea suffers and scored 100 percent as an apnea suffer, which led me to make the appointment with a sleep center.
I suggest that you ask you mom and/or your doctor if you can go to a Sleep Center and have them do a sleep study on you. This will let you (and you mom) know if you do (or do not) have sleep apnea. I hope she will not find this to be an unusual request - it's always better to find out if something is wrong, especially if you are worried about it. After all, if you do NOT have sleep apnea, then neither of you will need to worry about it again.
Good luck!

Sleep Study
If you are not sure how to approach mom, just have her log on here and read the posts, have her ask questions...it is a serious condition and you damage your "vital" organs when you have an episode of apnea.
At my first sleep study, I stopped breathing 90 times in 60 minutes, um, not good on the heart, lungs, liver, etc.
I am a mom, I know how we can be sometimes, but let mom see the messages here and replies, she will understand why you need to see a dr and have a sleep study; if it is a financial matter, medicaid pays for these things, I word in a medical environment, and it is covered...do it today, do not delay,,,,,,,you will feel better and those in your house will sleep better when you do!

What is Sleep Apnea & CPAP
Jen, if you have your computer at home that you are using on this site, get mom involved, if she does not feel comfortable with the use of the computer, get a print out, go to a search engine and type in sleep apnea, and keep gettting info to hermuch like this I have copied from the top of this page at this web site ( the streaming CPAP and Sleep Apnea News),

Often dismissed as bad snoring, sleep apnea is far more serious: Sufferers actually quit breathing for 10 to 30 seconds at a time as their throat muscles temporarily collapse. They jerk awake to gasp in air more than 10 times an hour, exhausted each morning because their brains never got enough deep sleep. Here is part of an article...
"An estimated 18 million Americans have sleep apnea, and more than half aren't diagnosed, according to NIH estimates. Patients don't remember the nightly breathing struggle, and often don't see a doctor unless a family member complains about the snoring and choking.
Apnea is most common among middle-aged men, but can even strike children if they have enlarged tonsils and adenoids. Being overweight increases the risk, as does having small airways or apnea in the family."
Good luck, keep in touch
