Truck drivers and sleep apnea

Post by Big Snore » Wed Aug 03, 2005 1:00 am

Hello everyone, I am considering starting a new career in the truck driving industry. I have sleep apnea, but my treatment has made me feel fantsastic!!! I am just wondering if anyone knows how the industry feels about having a hosehead behind the wheel. I was also wondering if anyone knew whether or not the trucks had regular plugs in the cab or if i would need to purchase some sort of adapter?

Thanks in advance!!
Corey

Corey,

1) I am delighted to hear you say how fantastic you feel. I have been saying the same but have worried that people might think me stupid for expressing it.
Fact is I still feel fantastic, so much so that I would not go 1 night without my CPAP machine & I can say that I didn't feel that way before starting.

2) I believe you can go for what ever profession you choose. I do believe that some states may have some regulations for people diagnosed OSA, that they meet certain compliance therapy requirements. There are some good folk here who can clarify this. For someone with your attitude, this will be no problem.

3) Most CPAPs will run off the cigarette lighter socket. If you want to get fancy, I am sure you could fit your rig with a spare battery (charged off the primary) that feeds a special cig style lighter socket just for your CPAP machine.

4) I am guessing we don't need to advise you about the 420S & 420E (or the new ResMed S8-Escape) in regard to lightweight CPAPs/ APAPs that you can trust.

Cheers & go for it.

Purchase a unit that will operate directly from 12 volts. You should be able to run from a trucks battery bank for a year without recharging. No worries about capacity .

Sell the house and hit the road

I work for a trucking company and we have a few drivers that use cpap machines. Our company installs power inverters in their trucks. Several of our drivers have microwave ovens with them and all our trucks are equipped with refrigerators. It really depends on the trucking company.
