You can have cpap.com contact your doctor.
I gave my doctor the 'heads up' beforehand, and he signed their 'anything' form.

Am I correct in guessing that this gives the patient the opportunity to buy any mask—not just one specifically prescribed by the doctor?

That would be awesome!

But do most regular insurances cover it? I have MVP at the moment.
Epworth Sleepiness Scale: 14
Diagnostic study: overall AHI: 0.2 events/hour; overall RDI: 45 events/hour
Titration study: AHI: 6.1; RDI: 27; CPAP pressures: 5-8cm

Not-tired behind my eyes and with a clear, cool head!

Insurance? I don't believe that cpap.com is in network for any health insurance plan--I could be mistaken, though.
Depending on how high your deductible is, or how much of it is left, you do the math, and decide for yourself.
Out of network for me has doubled deductibles and double the co-pay than "in-network".
If you have very good insurance, you may be ahead shopping locally--many of us are not that lucky.
