Replaced foam in machine now it is not sound proof-help me!

I am in trouble . . . yesterday my hubby opened my Goodknight 420 machine to check if the battery was still fine. When he opened it the foam that makes it sound proof, came out in pieces. It felt like memory foam so I cut out a new piece of memory foam, replaced it and when I switched it on last night the sound of the machine was unbearable. Sounded like a vacuum cleaner! Has anyone replaced that piece of foam and what did you replace it with? I don't think I need a new machine?

You will need to find a supplier of that part - unless someone can tell you a brand of foam that might be sound-proof. There are so many different types of foam that it would be very difficult to know what might work. If you have all the pieces that were removed, maybe you could super-glue them together as a temporary fix? Just don't glue them to the machine!

Changing parts willy nilly can be hazardous, shorts, fire, smoke etc. If you due get it repaired, throw hubbies tools out in the trash, better still make him get you a new machine. If it isn't broken don't fix it. Jim

Thank you my CpapFriends - my machine is discontinued but I will phone Resmed office immediately when doors open this morning (only 6am in RSA at the moment!) Maybe I am lucky and they can tell me what foam to use.
If not, then it is time for a new machine - early Xmas present!?!

There are many types of foam, I don't know what properties are required in a xpap. if you had old it would be better but the fact it tore up, it was probably at the end of its life.

Hi Marietjie, If you can't get it repaired what's the chances of getting a new upgraded one with insurance if you have it? I'm not familiar with the situation in SA. Please don't go sticking anything inside, it makes me nervous!

Chance are something other than the foam is causing the noise. The foam will only drop the noise 3 to 6 db which doesn't sound like the problem. Make sure the motor is spinning without hitting anything and the bearings are in the right position.

The acoustic foam inside my s9 looks much like sponge. Just don't use a kitchen sponge since they are covered in toxic stuff to keep them looking fresh. If they say "don't use in an aquarium" then they are full of stuff you don't want to breath. If they aren't labelled that way, they still might have the same stuff in them.

Your local car stereo installer might have something useful as well.
