I beat OSA! S8 Elite for sale

Post by TGregg » Tue Apr 22, 2014 8:39 am

Hi all,

Been a while since I was here. Been OSA free for two years after CPAPing for five. Still have my machine (ResMed S8 Elite) with 13313 hours used and don't need it any more. The head gear is old and the rubber parts are a bit yellowed on my Mirage II mask (not sure if it is medium or large), but the hard plastic is OK. Filter's probably ready for replacement. Also have a carrying case. If someone can make it worth my while to mail it to them, they can have it all.

I used to have lots of other stuff (masks, headgear, tubes and filters), but can't seem to find it. Might have tossed it out a year ago. I'm moving so I am going through all my stuff. If I find the rest, I'll post it here.

Meanwhile, some tips for getting over this thing. At least in some cases, it can be done. The main thing in my case was to lose weight - and I can hear the sighs from the bleachers. . Not only lose weight, but in my case I had to lose a #@*&load more than I thought. My ideal weight is ~190. I probably started OSAing ~260, and shot up to ~293 before I got serious about losing weight, eating right, exercising and cutting way back on the booze. I had to get down under 210 before my OSA went away! Here I am, getting skinny, way under what I weighed years before I had OSA and I still needed that mask every night! #@*&! But I persevered and now it's been over two years. It took me about 2 years of dedicated effort and a lot of personal development.

TGregg,

Congratulations on your weight loss.

I assumed you had a sleep study to confirm that you no longer have apnea?

Thanks 49er. Nope, no study. I don't snore and I don't wake up gasping - all confirmed by a sleepmate. And I've kept the weight off w/o the machine. Others may think I should get a new study (and they are free to do so), but I am confident in my results. Interestingly, my OSA became intermittent near the end. Some nights I wouldn't need the mask at all, other times I'd wake up and know I still had issues.

strong second on that

you do not have to snore or gasp to have sleep apnea.

I do hope your right and you did beat it, but do NOT let your desire to be right and be done with the machine over ride common sense. get the test and be sure you have beet it.
it can be hard to risk not being right and to have your dreams and hopes dashed, but better that when live in faults truth and suffer in the long run for it. better to be sure then to risk being sick and ill in your older years.

why not get the best sleep you can get? you will live a longer and healthier life, your older you will thank you for looking after the younger you.

Third --- sorry.

Your longterm health is at stake. We're all sure you're better -- but double check to make sure you're completely cured. You owe it to yourself!

Well said!

I am new to this whole CPAP thing but there is no way I would ever quit this without having a test to be SURE I didn't need it anymore. You took a test to find out that you needed CPAP, right? Please, take the test to be sure you don't need it anymore. Sleep apnea causes too many health issues to take the risk that you DO still have it.

Anyway, back to the point at hand:

I would suggest keeping the machine incase you don't have insurance when you are ready to go back on it. While you are in denial you can keep it in the back of a closet. Your machine has no real value with the older technology and number of hours.

Wondering if others have lost weight and able to beat sleep apnea. The sleep doctor said this was the case for him and likely for me. He appears to be still a few lbs. overwt.

I have a bmi of 30, ht 5'6" wt 205 when all this started (co-diagnosis NAFLD to NASH, diagnosed in Feb) and now down to 187. Because of the fatty liver problem progressing with inflammation, which is not good, I am tracking calories using MyFitnessPal.com.

Tracking calories is the only thing that has ever worked, plus like this poster I abstain from sugar and processed simple carbs (also alcohol) and eat fresh and organic as much as possible. It was hard but when faced with the possibility that my fatty liver could go from inflammation to fibrosis to cirrhosis from eating the wrong foods (don't drink) I had to do something. When I met with the sleep doc April 7 I weighed 189 and he said that should have been enough wt loss but to get another sleep test. Had it 4/12 and diagnosed with AHI 8.1, mild osa. So that is worse than when I was diagnosed with UARS in Aug 2012 and got a dental device but never could use it. Had no trouble falling asleep back then, but started waking more and more (weighed 205 then) and feeling extremely tired during the day.

Started the auto pap Friday 4/18 but not yet having success.

Now I'm skinnier and still sleepless for the most part. Ug.

Thanks STL Mark, I was wondering about that. I used it for five years, and it's been idle for 2 and change. Motors generally do not like sitting around for years without use. But even if I were to . . . err. . . "break out of denial" . . . I'd dive in with new tech. Guess I should just toss it.

Don't toss it just yet. I assume it still works just fine. Humidifier included and working?
I may have someone who could use it...I sent you a PM. While not ideal for what we need...better than nothing and there's still enough data available on that LCD screen to get us in the ball park.
Have no need for old masks though. Once opened the silicone dries out and gets ugly. Now if you have something that has never been opened...different story.
