Got CPAP machine today

As I said in my initial post here, I had a sleep study test done a couple of weeks ago with emergency split night. Before even finding this forum, I had already started researching CPAP machines and what to look for and which ones to stay away from. Today I had my appointment with the DME provider. To give a little background, my wife has been very sick the last couple of years, and I have been her caretaker and advocate during this time. My past experience with most DME providers is that I had to walk in there ready to battle from the beginning, (6'4", 300lbs, long red hair and big red beard along with formidable command presence, I usually won).

I figured that it would be another battle today. I came in armed with a piece of paper with a whole bunch of questions written down. I only got to ask two questions out of the whole list. First question was, will I be going home with a machine today? "Yes". Second question, what brand and model is my machine? "ResMed S9 AutoSet to also include modem and memory card so that you and your doctor can continue to monitor your progress after insurance compliance has been satisfied. We have also set your machine up to ramp up from 6 to your prescribed setting of 13 over a 30 minute period of time once you turn it on." They mostly sell ResMed products, so the masks we tried were all ResMed brand. I went with a ResMed full mask. She showed me how to set the humidification, fill and clean the water container, how to change the filters and how often, and how to change the masks out of the head gear and how often. Very pleasant experience.

Once we picked the mask out and I had it on, she actually turned the CPAP machine on for me to try. Mask felt like it formed a good seal, but wow if that is not a lot of air coming in quick. It is the same pressure that was used during my emergency split night, which was just a nasal mask, and I went right back to sleep once they got it on me, but it sure felt different. I will be using it tonight.

Modem data will be e-mailed to me. They gave me a memory card to also record data once the modem is returned, and to use now too. I saw a few threads with software recommendations. I am going to take a look at them over the weekend and download one. As for cost, my only cost is 20%. Today I had to pay $30, and then around $3 a month for the next ten months, and that should be it except for consumable supplies. They gave me an itemized bill today, and I will see what they send to the insurance company when they process the claim and post the info for me to view my claims on my insurance companies website.

The ramp up from 6 is why you feel like you are suffocating. Most of us turn it off after a few days--it's a comfort measure and not necessary. Sometimes it helps newbies, but more often it annoys them and makes them feel like they aren't getting enough air.

Actually what it felt like to me was way too much air blowing in and couldn't exhale.

Great job, rdavidp!! It will feel like a lot of air until you get used to it, but then you may find that you can't tell for sure whether the machine is on without checking.

I'll be here when you get tired of removing that modem to get access to "your data" everyday
and when you learn that data on the screen doesn't compare to the software.

Just remember who "tried" to warn you and those who wouldn't bother.
