Just need to complain for a few minutes ++

Post by MbMinx » Thu Feb 12, 2015 8:18 am

Our furnace has been out since Sunday night. The part is on order, but it may be next week before it all gets fixed. We are using space heaters (carefully) to heat our living areas.
The house is about 60 years old, and the wiring is adequate for normal life. However, not all of the circuits are up to the extra load that the space heaters are putting on everything. The circuit that includes our bedroom is one of them. We have found that, with the space heaters, we can run very few additional items without tripping the breaker. It would appear that my CPAP is one of those things...I've been without my CPAP since Monday night, and I feel like i can already tell the difference in my sleep quality.
Is that nonsense?
My husband says a few days shouldn't make that much difference.
I think the CPAP shouldn't be drawing that much power. I think it is the 14 YO's computer, but my husband insists that it's the CPAP that was making the difference.
I don't know. I'm tired, I'm cold and I'm cranky.
Thank God for judiciously applied space heaters!

That's terrible, I can't even think when it's too cold, let alone live in it for a week+!

What about trying it in another room where you can sleep e.g. in a recliner for a couple of nights - would it still draw too much there?

Hang in or maybe sleep at a friends even for 1-2 nights...

Your CPAP is one of the smallest electric draws in the house. The AC adapter is only rated at 60 watts, and the actual electric consumption is less than 12 watts with humidifier. I'd shut down the kid's computer at night.

You could run one or more of the heaters using a long extension cord to outlets in different rooms in the house -- see if you can draw power from multiple circuits rather than tax a single circuit.

Here's a reference table showing Watt consumption of various household items.

Does seem that a computer (particularly the monitor) is more of a power drain.

A few days without my CPAP would have a devastating result on my health, ability to function etc. that is why I have a backup and if power were a problem, I would move to a hotel.

CPAP is a medical necessity. A computer is not.

Thanks so much. I'll stick to my guns and try it tonight.
I didn't have a laptop when I was 14, and I made it through the night just fine...

Definitely turn the computer off. Here we can log in to our account with the local electric company and see our daily usage. When we started turning the computer off when it wasn’t being used, there was a very noticeable drop in electricity usage.

Starting to regret taking out the fireplace. It kept us warm during an eight day power outage long ago.
First fire totally freaked the cat. After that, he quickly learned to bogart the warm spot.

Almost all computers draw way more power than cpaps. Turn it off and put the child to bed. Running heaters on extention cords, starts a lot of home fires.

It seems in our enlightened times, we keep moving one step forward and two steps back! Dirty old coal furnaces always put out heat, if you fired them. I used to change mine to gas conversion, that required no external power. Now I have a high efficiency gas furnace, that won't run without electric, or expensive parts and labor, and made in China. If we keep getting smarter, we will soon be extinct. Jim
