Does the CPAP machine know when we are sleeping?
Does the CPAP machine know when we are sleeping?
ok so here is the deal. Last night I went out with a friend that had way too much to drink. I decided I can not let this dude drive anywhere so I decided to grab the keys and take him home. whats the problem you ask? well for 1 it was his dad's car which his dad needed for work today at 6am so I just couldn't drop him off and drive myself home. Long story short I took him home and just crashed on his couch. Now I am home and started thinking oh oh I messed up with my compliance. So the plan is to take a 4 hour nap today. I usually go to sleep at 12 or 1AM to 7 or 8 AM. So I am still in the time frame of logging in my 4 hours for today. Now say I take a 3 hour nap and wake up and just stay laying down with the machine on and me breathing through it of course for the other hour. Would it know that I am not asleep and not log that hour?
thanks
Jon
thanks
Jon

The machine knows if you are attached to it but that is the extent of what it knows. It can't tell if you are awake or asleep. It only knows if you are breathing and attached. If you are going to try to play catch up on the hours....make sure you do it by noon per the machine's clock or else it goes on the next day.

Re: Does the CPAP machine know when we are sleeping?
thank you Pugsy for that heads up on noon being the cut off. I guess I will just have to take this day as a lost as it is already 10AM here for me. Today will be the first and hopefully last day I sleep without my machine since I got it on the 10th of this month. Oh well cant dread over this because if not it will mess up my day. thanks for the reply..

Seriously you just were given a discontinued machine that has no data except hours used? You may want to read a lot more on this board.S9 Escape™ CPAP Machine with EPR™

Re: Does the CPAP machine know when we are sleeping?
OP is showing "S9 Escape AutoSet" in the comments section. Of course there is no Escape AutoSet but there is an Escape Auto. In the equipment profile there is no "S9 Escape Auto" so looks like OP chose the plain S9 Escape.
Jon..you might want to simply not use a machine choice from the drop down machine menu and instead just list it in the comments and amend the comments to S9 Escape Auto.
If you do have the S9 Escape Auto...it's a half assed brick...will only give you hours of use and total AHI (no event category breakdown) and pressure. No leak data...nothing else useful.
If you weren't aware of that fact you might want to read this blog ....scroll down to the bottom where it says "help I am stuck with a brick"

Don't worry about one night of missing data throwing the compliance thing off. It won't hurt it enough to matter as long as you are getting your hours in on the other nights.

Re: Does the CPAP machine know when we are sleeping?
Compliance is >4 hours 70% of the time, so can miss a night without problems so meeting the noon deadline really isn't an issue.
How you feel is more important. If you are tiered, you might take a nap today to catch up some sleep but that is more for how you feel.

Re: Does the CPAP machine know when we are sleeping?
Could the S9 Escape Autoset provide sleep data (graphs) like other S9 CPAPs?

Re: Does the CPAP machine know when we are sleeping?
No. All they offer are the "numbers" that you get on the summary statistics page in ResScan. Detailed data graphs are unavailable because the machine doesn't put those data files on the SD card.avi123 wrote:Could the S9 Escape Autoset provide sleep data (graphs) like other S9 CPAPs?
Numbers only...no events graphs or anything that you see in ResScan under the detailed tabs.
Summary statistics only and the AHI is just AHI in total...doesn't break it down to centrals, OAs or hyponeas.

Re: Does the CPAP machine know when we are sleeping?
Thank you all for your help with this. I am going to call my DME tomorrow and see if they will change it since it's only been 18 days since I have the machine. I'm kind of stuck with this DME as the doc told me that this was the only DME that worked with my insurance.. Will let you guys/gals know how it went tomorrow..

Re: Does the CPAP machine know when we are sleeping?
All that being said, the machine doesn't 'know' if you're awake or not, but it does know you're breathing is different (when you're awake) because the pattern will be very different. And anyone knowledgable could see that if they looked at your machine's readout - however you 'luckily' don't have a machine that gives those results so you probably have gotten away with it this time, but remember that you're cheating yourself (in future) if a similar situation arises.
Re: Does the CPAP machine know when we are sleeping?
There is no S9 Escape Auto but only S9 Escape (CPAP).

Re: Does the CPAP machine know when we are sleeping?
There most certainly is a S9 Escape Auto...the reason you don't see it at the link you provided is because that's cpap.com and they simply never offered the S9 Escape Auto for sale.avi123 wrote:There is no S9 Escape Auto but only S9 Escape (CPAP).

Also not only does the Escape Auto not offer any detail beyond AHI...it uses the older algorithm too.
