Anyone experience tongue burn using face mask
Hi,
First post on the forum although I've been on CPAP for over 2 years. My partner jokes it's like sleeping with Hannibal Lecter, hence the username
I've been using a ResMed machine with a nasal mask until recently I was fitted with a face mask (ResMed Quattro FX).
Sleep quality seems to have improved but I do wake up feeling like I have burned the tip of my tongue, as if I've had a too hot drink. Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions to overcome it or just a side effect you have to live with?

I usually eat Chile right before bed, with extra Chile powder, no problem here, except having to stop myself from getting a refill. Jim

Re: Anyone experience tongue burn using face mask
you are probably still mouth breathing a lot. That dries out the mouth and can make your tongue feel like that. Oragel makes a cream which helps keep your mouth moist. Besides your tongue, your teeth are in danger. Lack of mucus means an increase in bacteria.

Also if you are mouth breathing, the worse of the problem is you may not be treating the Sleep Apnea at all, tour treatment may be going out your mouth, JimBlackSpinner wrote:you are probably still mouth breathing a lot. Re: Anyone experience tongue burn using face mask
Thanks for your suggestions and observations, I think a lot of my treatment WAS going straight out of my mouth when I had a nasal mask, hence my request for a face mask (which seems to have improved my sleep quality). I was told initially that I was a nose breather, but perhaps I'm not a consistent nose breather however, that's another discussion.

I don't think my mouth drys out to badly, I assume though that the air rushing past the top of my tongue causes cold burn.BlackSpinner wrote:you are probably still mouth breathing a lot. Re: Anyone experience tongue burn using face mask
I had tongue soreness when i first started because I would sleep on my side and apparently bite the edge of my tongue. Haven't felt it in a long time and I think for me it was just getting used to the machine.
What you are describing sounds more like this http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-cond ... c-20179960
I would treat the dry mouth even though it doesn't seem bad and see if it goes away. I like to use Orajel for Dry Mouth before before bed. If the soreness continues check out the other causes with your doctor/dentist.

Re: Anyone experience tongue burn using face mask
I sometimes eat chili.
Chile is a country--not exactly a tasty dish.
A burning sensation on your tongue could be thrush, due to drying out.
Look for Ora-Jel for dry mouth, or use a chin strap, tape, or a full face mask.

Every nite at 2 a.m. bedtime, as long as my sugar level can afford it. I hold the Lunch record at where I used to work, 43 days straight, Dinty Moore 24 0z. They all cheered when I'd open my lunch pail. I'm a strange creature.... I have had Chili and Chile, never had them together, they might be too hot. Been around the World, but never had Chili in Chile. Jimchunkyfrog wrote:I sometimes eat chili.

I already use a full face mask, this is when the issue started, may try the orajel (oragel? ora-jel?) as it's been mentioned here a few times now.

That would be my guess.
Perhaps turn up the humidifier by 1.

It is Orajel for Dry Mouth. Be sure it is the one that says for Dry Mouth. Sometimes it is hard to find but you can get it online. ChicagoGranny orders it from Walmart and has it shipped free to her local store for pickup. I've gotten mine through Amazon. They also make the gum numbing gel and you don't want that one.

And if the room is cold, put a hose cover on the hose so that the air is still warm when it reaches the mask.
