Recommendations for Full Face Mask?

Post by grayson » Sun Oct 01, 2006 9:19 am

I've settled on some nasal masks that work well for me. One of the primary criteria I had for selecting a nasal mask was low mask/exhaust noise, as close to silent as I could get.

By reading this forum I learned that its good to have a full face mask on hand when you have cold or are congested and tend to breathe more through the mouth. I'm starting my search for one now.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a full face mask that is quiet? I realize that we all are able to tolerate mask/exhaust noise at different levels. I'm looking for the quietest full face mask I can find.

I have the exact same situation. I went with a Hybrid mask and am having very good luck with it. Never knew how nice it would be to be able to breathe through my mouth sometimes. Had some problems with leaks at the nose pillows, but read on this board to use chap stick. Did that ever work! The mask is a little pricey, but the first two nights have been good. I will be glad when they get the new straps on the market.

Giving mask advice is hard to do, because in my experience there's no consistent way to tell what will work for a given individual.

I've used the Breeze, CL2, UMFF (standard and large sizes), CF2 (standard and large sizes), Hybrid, and the HC431. I currently prefer the 431. You might hate it. But for me, it's quiet, comfortable, prone to leaks but manageable with practice, and I get good numbers. I may well change favorites tomorrow.

I don't understand how people get by with just one mask. Rotating to different models can help with tissue irritation, and I would rest uneasy if I did not have a backup mask around in case of breakage. I actually take two masks when travelling.

I have tried The Comfort Full™, Comfort Full2™, Hybrid™, F&P 431 ™, and the Ultra Mirage™ FF mask.

For me, The Ultra Mirage is BY FAR the quietest, and it is my favorite FF mask.
If Resmed becomes some sort of problem with purchasing (though I doubt it)
I may look into the Mojo Gel FF, but *some* folks are saying it's the noisiest of them all, so I intend on making sure that is not the case, if I should ever stray away from the best.

Vader - Activa

Vader,

I see in your profile that you use a Resmed Activa in addition to your Ultra Mirage II FF.

How quiet is the Activa compared to your Mirage FF and to other masks you've tried?

All full-face masks pass a lot of air out through the exhaust ports. The Hybrid passes the most air.
The Hybrid is very quiet if there are no items within 12 inches of its exhaust
ports. However, it sounds like a freight train when anything is moved into
the exhaust area. This Hybrid "feature" makes it difficult to run the Hybrid with hose up, and over.

When considering the Hybrid ask yourself these questions:

1) Do I have molars? Believe me its very hard to seal the Hybrid
and the UMFF without them. The HC431 might be a better choice for
this condition (if it wasn't so hot).

2) Do I have a round face with chubby cheeks or large mouth with with
a narrow face? The Hybrid is more friendly to the former.

3) Are my nares conditioned to nasal pillows? The Hybrid is a nasal pillow
mask with a mouth-piece. Therefore, its a very good companion for those
who can use a nasal pillow masks.
If you have never used a nasal pillow mask, you will experience some initial pain.

4) Do not be afraid to cut off the chin-flap if you are having trouble getting
the Hybrid to seal.
