I know some people get a discount on their electric bill for CPAP but I always heard that our local provider, PG&E, did not permit that. There's a list of covered medical devices here and CPAP is noticeably absent: https://www.pge.com/en_US/residential/s ... pment.page
After the wildfires, PG&E is implementing a policy of shutting down the electricity and threatening to do it for as long as 1 week when there are high winds and high temperatures causing extreme fire danger. I don't see how they could get away with keeping the electricity off that long (Northern Californians are already pretty pissed at them for wanting to raise the rates to cover the billions of dollars of damage from the fires their downed lines caused), but even for a few days it would be devastating.
Besides the fact that I can't run my business without electricity and make a living and we'd lose all of our perishable food, my biggest worry is the CPAP. I only have to fall asleep for a few minutes without it to know I still have severe apnea and absolutely need it (how did I survive before CPAP???).
Today PG&E reps were going door to door to collect some data and told us that I am eligible for the medical baseline discount. She also said that they will keep our electricity on during a planned safety outage. I don't see how that could possibly be true, but we will see. All the website promises is that I will get advanced warning of a planned outage (well, duh, shouldn't they warn everyone???). When we lived on the Big Island of Hawaii there were rolling blackouts. They always announced the time so we could plan ahead, and we would simply arrange to have our dinner ready in time for a candelight dinner since the outages were only an hour or so (we were newlyweds and it was very romantic ) But days and days??? OY!
I've been thinking if they really turn our electricity off for days I'll have to go stay in a motel in another town to use my cpap and computer. I don't really want to do a generator, maybe I'll consider a camping battery but I'd still have to go out of town to charge it up.

Re: Medical baseline discount for CPAP with PG&E?
I have been contemplating the power outage issue as well (different reasons, same result). There have a few very good threads on the topic. It seems like the best options are a battery setup, a direct DC cable (not through an inverter) to the cpap, and a way to charge the battery. The last could be via a generator, small solar panel, or using my car in some manner. Or going to a location with power...Janknitz wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2019 8:40 pmI've been thinking if they really turn our electricity off for days I'll have to go stay in a motel in another town to use my cpap and computer. The DC Converter 24V 90W For AirSense™ 10 and AirCurve™ 10 Machines is required to use the following machines with DC power directly from a battery:
AirSense™ 10 CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier
AirSense™ 10 Elite CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier
AirSense™ 10 AutoSet CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier
AirSense™ 10 AutoSet for Her CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier
AirCurve™ 10 S BiLevel Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier
AirCurve™ 10 VAuto BiLevel Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier
Failure to use the ResMed DC Converter 24V 90W For AirSense™ 10 and AirCurve™ 10 Machines can damage the machines. (This is only a partial list of ResMed models that require the 24V DC converter.)

A 100 amp-hour battery should carry your pump for a week if you don't use heat or humidity. If you need more power a 100 watt solar panel would produce about 35 amp-hours a day (depending on a whole mess of variables).Janknitz wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2019 8:40 pm...

That's because only one thread is really necessary:TropicalDiver wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2019 11:19 pm...I have been contemplating the power outage issue as well (different reasons, same result). There have a few very good threads on the topic. ...

Re: Medical baseline discount for CPAP with PG&E?
Thanks all! I really like the idea of a solar charger, too. We live in earthquake country as well, so it sounds like a good thing to have on hand. I'm going to start looking around for options.
