Swelling
Re: Swelling
I don't see how cpap use can cause parotitis.
I have just gotten over a bout with Paratitis....ugly...I was really sick with it.
BUT I have been on cpap since May 2009 and this is the FIRST time I have had Parotitis. CPAP didn't cause it.
Bad luck and some sort of virus or bacteria caused it.
I had the mumps some 60 years ago.
See a doctor....ASAP if you haven't already.
I was put on high power antibiotics and Flonase nasal spray and told to treat the symptoms in what ever way that it felt better....be it ice or heat to the swelling.
It did trigger my BPPV (vertigo) and that has hung on for 3 weeks now. That has been more annoying than the 3 or 4 days with the acute infection and high fever. (103 temp that barely responded to aspirin to get it down to 101)
I am just now sort of feeling human again but that's mainly the vertigo that has been slow to leave me.
All that swelling and fluid screwed up my inner ear.

Re: Swelling
Hi,
Sorry you are going through this and hope you feel better soon. I'm a new CPAP user, so no I have not experienced this.
As the previous poster indicated, this condition seems to be a result of a virus/bacteria. Have you had a virus recently and if so, have you been disenfecting your CPAP equipment? Not just washing, but disinfecting to kill any bacteria or viral pathogens that may latched on.

Re: Swelling
Ask your doctor if it might have been started by a salivary stone. These are stones that form in the parotoid ducts inside your cheeks and plug it up, trapping bacteria that causes infection.
I get salivary stones, but luckily I have learned to notice them early and start sucking on lemons! My first symptom that a stone is starting to block the duct is I feel like I bit my cheek (and sometimes I do if it's swollen). I can feel the swelling and sometimes the stone. Sucking on something sour makes the duct contract and can expel the stone. We have Meyer lemons--they are sour enough but also sweet. I freeze the juice when there are lots of lemons to harvest and warm up the lemon juice to drink when I get a stone. When I don't have Meyer Lemons I'll use regular lemons, but they are very unpleasant to suck on.
The salivary stones are not caused by CPAP. My dad, who never used a CPAP (though he probably needed one--snored all the time, fell asleep every time he sat down without eating or talking) had them too, so I think I have a hereditary pre-disposition. He used to get parotitis and have a lot of pain and swelling. Thankfully, mine have never been that bad, I think because I catch it early.
