Switching from nasal to FFM

Post by wordlife15 » Fri Oct 03, 2008 12:30 pm

Hi there. I have just switched masks form a respironics nasal comfortgel (medium size) to a resmed mirage ultra FFM (medium standard). I'd been having on and off problems with nasal congestion and mouth breathing for the last 6 months since starting on CPAP. So I decided to go for the full face mask. So far no problems with leaks and the size seems pretty good. The biggest difference is the increased volume of air coming in - it's the most noticeable thing I feel with this mask. The air also feels a little cold relative to the nasal, even with the humidifier set to 3. As a result I could only tolerate it for a few hours and took it off. Any suggestions from others who have switched over to FFM - is it just a matter of getting used to this feeling and eventually you won't notice any more.

Go raibh maith agaibh. Thanks

I made the switch also. Best thing I could have done for my therapy.
.....but, I'm a mouth breather and fixes for that were not tolerable for me.

I noticed the same increased volume of air. I thought is was because I started
w/a Quattro large mask. It was WAY too big. It felt like scuba gear.
I would guess that it is like most of the mechanics of cpap, you just need to adjust to it.

I am using an UMFF/small and a Quattro/small. MUCH better fit.
I am used to both now. I sometimes wake up and don't realize that I
have it on or that I am breathing w/it.

I am very happy to say that w/a ffm, my cpap life is very good.

That's good to hear. How long did it take for you to really feel that improvements in therapy?

I felt a "difference" on the 5th morning. It was small.
My legs didn't hurt quit as much as they usually did.
I always would gauge how bad the day was going to be after
I walked up to the second floor of the building where I work.
On the 5th am, I could tell that something was different.

I said to myself, "....maybe, just maybe"
Since then, a little everyday. No million $$ mornings,
but maybe some thousand $$ mornings.

Now, coming up on 100 days, no doubt it is making a difference.
Too many things to list.....I'm a different person.
I wouldn't dream of going to bed w/out Grace. (Grace is what I named my mask/machine)

It took years to tear me down, it is going to take years to build it back.......I'm well on my way back.

If you read through my recent posts, you'll see that I was having a similar problem, only I think I reacted even more severely. I couldn't stand the cold air blowing in, and it was driving me so nuts that I couldn't even sleep. I ended up ordering the "Aussie Heated Hose" pronto! I love it! It's made by SleepZone, and I ordered it from cpapusa.com. It came right away! It "took the chill off" the cold air blowing in, and the temp felt perfect. Looking forward to my second night with it-tonight.
