Mealatonin / w Ambien CR ?

Post by Sleepy Boy » Sat May 09, 2009 4:29 am

I go to bed at 10pm every night -always- Last 2 nights I took a 1mg. melatonin at 9:30 and another one at about 10, and I take it with my Ambien CR I'm ususally in the bed within 10 min. For the last two nights since I tried this, I've gotten great sleep. My question -Is it harmful to take them together like that? I feel good when I get up, and all daylong. Thanks, Larry...

Am I the only one out here that takes Melatonin & Ambien? Or am I the only one who has taken them together? Larry.

Your not the only one. My PCP suggested I add it to my regular dose of ambien cr.

Thanks Scoobie, I will keep trying it. Don't know what to call it though. Would it be called Ambitonin? Or would it be Mealabien? And what about the CR? I know what CRS is-I already have that one...Thanks, Larry..

I take 3mg of melatonin in the evening and 5mg of Ambien (not the CR) just before I go to bed. Some nights I fall asleep within half an hour and some nights, like last night and FRiday night, I lie awake for two hours waiting for sleep to come. I can't figure out what makes the difference so that I can avoid (or try) it again. Sleep is a mystery to me.

I did take Melatonin for about a week last month, as I was still dealing with anxiety issues in my second month of CPAP. The Melatonin knocked me out, and for the first time I had great numbers (AHI under 5). My problem with Melatonin was getting a bit of a hangover which would last most of the next day. Now for some reason (and I'm not quarreling with it), I can go to sleep easily now with no "chemical help." Seems to have gotten me over the hump.

Have never taken Ambien........

I know what you mean. The other night I was adjusting my mask, and woke up in the middle of the night with the lamp still on. I fell asleep while adjusting my mask. Other nights I'm awake till 1-2 in the morning... Larry..

One trick with Melatonin is to take much less. The 3mg dose leaves me with a massive hangover. I've actually found that micro doses of about 0.5mg or even 0.25 mg work well for improving sleep quality, and leave me with minimal aftereffects. I encourage everyone to test much lower doses. Try titrating up starting at .5 mg and see what works for you. My sense is that melatonin improves sleep quality as well as sleep.

I have taken melatonin for years, even before XPAP. I now take 6 mg a night before bed, and it usually works great. Don't take timed-release melatonin - that will give you the melatonin "hang-over" the next day. In addition to helping you sleep, it's good for your overall health.
