Gel - or somethinbg for -- dry mouth?

Post by ephraimh » Mon Mar 25, 2013 12:06 pm

My mouth has become hideously dry every night; it's waking me up. A sip of water and a quick swish resolves the problem but it invariably returns requiring more water. I use an ASV with an Activa nasal cushion mask and a large chin strap. Many, many months ago I trimmed some of my nasal hair back -- too far. I'm sure that's what causing the dryness. I can't account for it any other way. I use the humidifier that comes with the machine and I don't drink alcohol or caffeine.

Do you know of any gel (or whatever) that I can use to keep things a bit moister while sleeping? I'd rather not have the stuff in my mouth all night. I used some thick stuff ages ago but I don't remember its name and I was using a full face mask then. It wasn't pleasant.

thanks

You're mouth-leaking or mouth-breathing. As soon as you manage to keep your mouth sealed, it will most likely stop.
Chin straps are NOT a sure way of doing it. Mouth-taping or a full face mask should.
Some people who have diabetes or take some medications can also have dry mouth.
Too much (warm) humidification can also cause nasal congestion and force the user to have to mouth-breathe to get enough air.

The Biotene line of products is good. Very good. I originally started using their products years ago when I was taking a medication that causes dry mouth and consquential dental problems. I no longer take that med but have continued using Biotene because of the improvement in my checkups at the dentist. I can't stand rubbing the moisturizing gel around in my mouth and then going to bed with the slimy feeling (ewww). So my compromise is to swish around some of the Biotene mouth rinse just before putting my night guard in and taping up. Don't rinse with water after swishing. It is non-alcoholic and non-drying and has a very mild taste. Now if I start mouth-leaking (extraordinarily rare occurrence now that I'm taping), I will wake up painfully parched like you describe. Nothing seems to be able to combat the effects of mouth-leaking!

Good luck.

You can also check out the whole line of Biotene products on their website. And they're everywhere -- CVS, Target, Walmart...

I tried Biotene and didn't like it. I've never been really sure why my mouth was so dry. I haven't shown any leaks but extremely minor ones of very short duration. If you are experiencing mouth leaks, you will need to address that issue, but if you are like me:

I offer my solution as an alternative, in case you find Biotene isn't your cup of tea, either.

I found Xylo Burst mints on Amazon, and I've found that tucking one on each side of my cheeks keeps my mouth nice and moist. There is the added benefit of improving my dental health by using Xylitol, too.

I have a full face mask and have found having issues with dry mouth too. I just started using some Act brand moisturizing mouth rinse just before bed. I'm having some success with it, the dry mouth isn't as pronounced as it was. At least it doesn't seem to be so far.
