What kind of 3M Micropore Tape?

Post by bjhunt01 » Sat Jun 08, 2019 11:00 pm

Hello all - I am new and have tried 8 masks and now have had 4 days on the BLEEP. I have a bad mouth breathing problem and have been trying tape. I also talk in my sleep. I thought I had the right kind of tape but I can blow it out during the night. I see many references to 3M Micropore 2" tape for taping the mouth. Went to amazon and find that it comes in paper, surgical, and cloth. Which kind are you all using so I will know what to order?

Also I saw a tape in the form of an X that goes over the mouth. Is that useful? Any other tips for keeping my mouth closed would be appreciated. Many thanks. (Can't use chin straps as I have scalp allodynia and they hurt like heck.)

Check chin up strips.
I cut my own, rather than buy the name brand ones.
Cheap, the way I grew up.

"micropore" is a specific type of tape. It does not come in any other type, other than 'Micropore +" (which is a little stickier).

3m plastic tape is Transpore.

3m Cloth tape is Medipore.

They are all 'surgical', according to 3m.... as are many other of their medical tapes.

I don't know what a "chin up strip" is, what it looks like, what it's made of, etc. Can you elaborate?

So I went back to double check and here's what I found:

3M Medipore Soft Cloth Surgical Tape - 3" wide per roll
3M Micropore Paper Tape - White, 1
3M Durapore Silk-Like Cloth Surgical Tape 2" x 10 yds.

So what I am asking is: who is using paper, soft cloth, or silk like as to what you have found to be effective and most comfortable? Thank you.

I'm using Micropore 2 inches with great success.

I suggest you try all three - everyone's face is different and sometimes we have to do our own research.

When I taped my mouth I used whatever I had handy...which was the cheap blue painters tape left over from a paint job in the kitchen.
It worked well for me. No need to move on to more expensive different tapes. Doesn't work well for some others.
Which tape to use....just another one of those things regarding cpap that has a big YMMV sticker on it.

There’s also a product called Somnifix that seals off the mouth and let’s you breathe a bit out of a built in slit in the front. I know someone using it and they seem to like it.

FWIW, I use the 1" micropore paper tape. Box of 12 10 yard rolls for $10. With dispensers. I bought this on Feb 28th(Amazon) and have used 3.5 rolls. I'm pretty sure that I use more than most every night.

I've since figured out that the dispensers are reusable. Can probably find lower price knowing this.

The 3m brand of the blue tape has 6 different levels of stickiness - they're not all the same. I've never used it for mouth taping but if I did it would be the "medium" stckiness (that's the one I have laying around). I'm guessing if you wash and dry your face before applying you'd get better adhesion with any of them.

It was 10 years ago that I did the taping thing and only did it for about 3 months. Back then not so many choices in blue tape and I don't remember which I did use because the wrapping was long gone. I did notice not long ago that there are many more ways to go with the blue painters tape than I had 10 years ago.

Everyone here knows that I am the queen of cheap....I always try cheap first. Sometimes it works just fine. Whatever kind of blue tape I used for the kitchen paint job...you can bet it was cheap and that's what I used for 3 months when I was taping. I never did buy anymore.

not tape, but a different possible solution-

viewtopic/p1089718/viewtopic.php?f=1&t= ... s#p1086296

i use this method as i'm a full bearded fellow for whom tape just doesn't work. this method has helped me keep my lips together and has lowered my ahi quite a bit.

good luck!
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

I have found 3M Micropore tape to be good to prevent mouth breathing but lately I bought a chin strap on amazon , just put chin strap into amazon and you will see loads, i now prefer this to taping as I found the tape would get moist as the night went on and some times it would leak , also if I wanted to drink something I would have to remove tape and reapply which is a pain in the middle of the night.

Their site suggests they use 2 different types of medical tape--one more grippy-the other gentler.
I used wide blue painters tape. I dislike the smell of off-brands, so only the good stuff.
