Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset pressure irregularities

Post by Doncrow89 » Thu Jun 27, 2019 1:18 am

Hello all,
It’s 3 o’clock here in South Carolina and for the past hour I have been troubleshooting my machine. I woke up about 2 with my machine going crazy by way of the pressure. When the mask is on the pressure was on full blast and would seem to attempt to regulate (cycle) itself to correct the problem. Also the machine was very loud due to the max pressure. The screen showed no signs of any irregularities or anything. When the mask was removed the pressure coming from the machine was very low. I check my mask for tears and any problems. I checked my tubing for any problems. Both were fine. I ran a mask fit and it said poor and regardless of the adjustments there were no changes. I unplugged it and left it for like 10 minutes. At that point I was looking up warranty information thinking that my machine was busted after only one year of use. Then, I found what seems to be the problem. I do not use my humidifier. It’s off and has never seen a drop of water. I took the humidifier out and popped it back in and presto! The machine started working again! I’m not sure what happened if maybe it got unclipped somehow or what but it seemed to fix the problem for now so yeah. Hopefully this helps someone because I was stressing hard as I use my machine religiously.

Yours is the closest problem I have read to what i am having. I get 2-3 second pressure surges. Wakes me up and my husband too. This Resmed 10 is 3 days old. I had the same surging problem with my old machine, also resmed. I used it for 5 years. The last 2 years it surged. I put silicone jelly on the seal of the water chamber and it helped for a few months. Then even that didnt help. I think there may be leaking pressure problems having to do with the humidity chamber seal.
The company said that if they cant make it happen, that i cant return it. Ha! I’ll just call medicare and tell them not to pay the lease. I’m so frustrated.

So, in summary, you had a massive leak, and fixed it.

That certainly can seem like the machine is "going crazy by way of pressure", when it actually isn't... it's trying desperately to create pressure.

  • Whenever you have a leak or unusual behaviour, check and reseat everything, hoses and the humidifier tank.
  • Even if you don't use water, have a spare humidifier.
  • Better yet, if you don't use water, order the ResMed 10 side panel. https://www.cpap.com/en/ca/productpage/ ... side-cover
  • Have spares of everything

Had a similar problem a few times. Turned out it was the humidifier tray not being fully seated.

Thanks for all of the feedback! This was my first time posting on any cpap forum. Yes, I would assume it was a massive leak. I’m not that well versed in the workings of a cpap machine, so I wasn’t knowledgeable enough to chalk it up to that...especially at 2am. I really appreciate the bit about the side panel piece. I will be ordering one of being that I don’t use the humidifier. Thanks all and sleep well! :D

Don't feel bad about not figuring things out when half asleep in the middle of the night... that's one of the most difficult times to figure anything out :)

Thank you Doncrow89!
My cpap started surging and I got no help from either the manual or the resmed site.
I also do not use the humidifier so did as you suggested by reinserting it and bingo air pressure is normal again.
:D Your post saved me a lot of time from calling or bringing my machine in.

I had the same problem last night- instead of automatically working just fine as it has for the last 6 years, when I put on my mask, the air starting surging like a fire hose, about every 2 to 3 seconds, and after about 15 seconds, it starting surging every second, making it impossible to use. Manual was no help; the ResMed website was no help. Biggest disappointment: I called Lincare where I purchased my ResMed AirSense 10 Autoset over 6 years ago, explained the problem to the CPAP service tech, and the tech said that the machine was broken, that it would be a lot cheaper to replace it than to repair it. Not true at all. After searching online and watching multiple videos, I finally found cpaptalk.com, read your posts, and WOW! All I had to do was remove the humidifier, put it back in, and my CPAP was fixed, again working perfectly. Unfortunately, it now seems pretty obvious why this fix is not mentioned on any of the ResMed sites or videos, or why their certified service tech would not suggest it: because it's a free fix.
