Dreamwear mask irritation & other newbie questions

Post by Japparis » Mon Aug 19, 2019 10:21 pm

I love my Dreamwear FFM! The only problem is, after the third night I've gotten a reddish ring around my mouth and nose. It doesn't itch. It just feels dry. My mask does not feel too tight. The only difference is that I turned my humidity down to 2/5 and my tubing down to 70%. I did this because I get very warm at night. Could this be what caused this?

Have you washed the mask each day? If so with what?
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

Good call, possible a reaction from soap?

Last night was only my third night with the machine and mask. I cleaned it with a baby wipe which was suggested by the person who fitted my mask and taught me how to use the machine. I bought the sensitive skin ones. Last night was the first time I used the wipe. I waited until it was dry and them put the mask on. Not a good idea?

Some people do very well with baby wipes. I am allergic to them. I use a cotton round with rubbing alcohol on my cushion in the morning when I get up and every 2 or 3 days I just take it apart and wash the whole cushion with hot water and dr bronners peppermint soap. (Some people prefer dawn dish soap but I like the minty smell from the dr B's).

I have really sensitive skin. I occasionally (very occasionally) wash my mask in warm, soapy water using 7th Generation Dish detergent. Otherwise I do not clean it. No baby wipes, nothing. I make sure my face is clean and I do use the little fleece covers that come with the mask (wash them the same way as the mask itself). No problems.

Thank you, so much, for your replies! This is a whole new world for me. I'm going to stay away from the baby wipes and see what happens. Hopefully, this will clear and I'll be able to tell if that was the problem. If so, that will be an easy fix. 😊

I believe since I'm new, I should continue to post under the same thread, right? I hope so. Ok. Sometimes I still have to get up, maybe once during the night to go to the bathroom. When I take off my mask, should I press the button like I'm waking up (to turn it off) and turn it back on when I get back? Or should I just leave it blowing until I come back? Thanks!

It is nice when people have questions that they keep them all in one central location for a while.
Newbies often have lots of questions and it makes it easier on everyone when its all in a central location to refer to.
Not a hard fast rule but it is nice to have.

As far as turning the machine off or not when you get up during the night for some reason....it's not something that is set in concrete as it doesn't really matter but most prefer to just turn it off. It doesn't really harm anything to let it run but it might inflate your leak numbers just a bit because the machine might see it as a big leak until it realizes you are no longer attached to it.

I have always just turned it off myself. Mainly because it is extremely noisy when it is just blowing and it can disturb my husband.

My mother uses baby shampoo to clean her mask. I just used some Dawn soap because it's what I had. I'm allergic to everything under the sun so i have not tried the baby shampoo to see if I would be allergic to it but you could try that and see how you do. Dawn soap has a pleasant smell I find, I would steer clear of alcohol, I use to be a welder and I know alcohol wipes would break down the rubber 3m mask faster and make me break out more. I just realize if it is Silicone you could be allergic to the silicone itself. I can't remember if someone posted this but try saline aloe nasal gel that may work for you, Brand I used was Ayr I'm sure any brand will be fine. The Aloe Vera seems to help me breath better I find just before i go to bed, it seems to open up my sinuses.

Last night, I woke up at 4:45. My mask was off and hung on my bedpost? I KNOW I put it on when I went to bed. The myAir program shows I had it on the whole time with just a minor air leak? Unfortunately, I haven't gotten my SD card yet. When I do, will I be able to go back and check last night or does it just start from when I put the SD card in? Also, noticing the the myAir says I had a good night but I'm still waking up feeling tired. I'm sure sleepyhead will be able to help with that, right? I've only had the machine for 8 days. Thanks, guys!

Another question. I've noticed how people think their machines are loud, including people using my machine. When I turn mine on I don't hear anything except the air coming out of the mask, until I get the mask on properly. Then it's completely silent unless I reach under the mask to scratch my nose or something. Is this normal? Thanks again!

Once you get the SD cad, the machine will write the summary data for each night the machine has been used. You will only get the detailed data if the SD card is in the machine while it is being used. The noise level you mentioned is normal. We (my wife and I) don't start our machines until after have put our mask and are ready to lay down before we start the machine. In fact, I have mine set on auto start and start the machine after I lay down, adjust my bed to where I want it, and feel like I am comfortable enough to sleep. I clip the elbow onto my mask and take a deep breath to start the machine.
