Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
Hi Everyone.
I read a post on here where a person said that their machine sounded as though it was struggling when they woke up, and they could hear their breath going through the machine....or words to that effect.
I have a brand new machine, and have had that exact problem, twice already. With mine, it sounds at first as though the machine is struggling, but when I listen closely, it just sounds like my breath is somehow moving in and out of the machine, or something like that....but I do get the feeling that it shouldn't be happening.
Does this happen with anyone else's machines? If so, does it just come and go, or should I do something about it in case it gets worse?

I just read your post about your worry. about suffocating if the power goes out..after reading this one, I think much of your problem is anxiety. See your doctor.

Re: Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
I've never noticed that in the morning, but I do notice something like that when I first turn it on. I could be totally wrong on this - but I am under the impression that you need to relax and breathe and that the first few minutes allows the machine to get in sync with your breathing pattern.
Writing that makes me think I'm wrong, it's only a machine with a motor, not responding to breath, but "whatever." Hearing the machine start up and me relaxing to get into a comfortable breathing rhythm helps me unwind.

I agree, just responded to your post about suffocating. You are worried about this whole CPAP thing. Can you talk to your doctor about it? They may be able to help put your mind at ease so you can stop thinking about the machine, get some sleep, and get your apnea under control.
My worries in the beginning were more about "How can I keep this stupid mask on all night? How am I supposed to sleep with this thing? Do I really have sleep apnea?"

Re: Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
No. Nor have I. That's why I'm asking about it. I've been on CPAP for about 3 months, using hired machines until a week ago. They didn't make this noise, and the new one has made it twice in a week, out of seven times that I've used it. If I had to nail down where the noise is, it is at the area where the machine takes air in, on the left side.
Re: Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
The XPAP uses a motor, like a fan to supply the air you need, unlike a fan it speeds up and slows down to meet your needs, the noise level and sound change as it does this, it's how things work.

Re: Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
Your machine is maintaining a column of air at a specific pressure, from the machine to your throat. That column of air is what is splinting your throat open when you sleep. When you inhale, you're reducing the pressure of that column of air, and the machine responds by accelerating the fan to increase the pressure back to what it's supposed to be at. When you exhale, you're blowing into the column of air and increasing the pressure. The machine slows the fan down to bring the bring the pressure back to where it's supposed to be.
The waxing and waning of the fan matches your breathing almost perfectly so it does sound like your breathing, but it's just the machine maintaining your prescribed pressure.

Re: Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure if I've explained the noise as well as I could have.
I've found another couple of threads dealing with this problem, and a Youtube clip where the sound can be heard.
Here are the links to the other threads:-
viewtopic/t114657/New-Resmed-Airsense-1 ... aling.html
viewtopic/t174490/Resmed-Airsense-10-Motor-Noise.html
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=118483
And a link that a guy from this site posted on Youtube. This is the exact noise it makes:-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp_xMg3 ... e=youtu.be
After hearing that noise, do other peoples' machines do this sometimes? Mine doesn't do it all the time...was doing it again this morning, so it's done it three times in eight days. Any thoughts, anyone?

Re: Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
Yes, stop looking for trouble! If you're getting good numbers and feel decent when you wake up, then stop questioning every little thing or else find a therapist to help you relax.
You're dealing with a manmade machine, not a gift from God. And it's having to deal with you
. Give it a chance to do its thing and you concentrate on doing yours.
So you can hear a little sound at times, so what? Is it actually affecting your therapy? The numbers? Whatever?
Find some special fantasy to concentrate on when you're about to sleep and go with that if you have to... just stop obsessing about the machine.
If the worst thing in your life right now is that little noise, you're doing a lot better than most of the world.

Re: Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
I wonder if there's anyone who'd like to answer the question I actually asked...or thought I asked.
If anyone's interested in listening to the noise in the Youtube clip; if you've never had an issue with your machine like that...there isn't much point in answering (but you can if you want to...I don't mind). If you've had this problem, I'd be interested to hear your answers. That's why I asked the question. I want to know if I should take my machine back and have it replaced. I don't see much point hanging onto it if it's something that definitely shouldn't be happening. On the other hand, if I get answers saying that everyone who has, eg. a Resmed For Her machine, gets this noise on their machine, then I won't bother asking the dealer about swapping it.
(Here is the Youtube clip again, if anyone wants to have a look at it):-

Re: Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
Sorry, I hadn't actually listened before and it is annoying! Except I still can't help because I don't have a Vauto and don't know what they should sound like. Complain to the dealer?
Re: Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
I am currently using an AirCurve 10 VAuto....that is not normal. It needs to go back to where you got it from.
My machine is essentially silent. Absolutely nothing like that at all.
That's more than just breathing noises...it's motor noise made worse with the breathing and fan increasing.. It's a lemon.

I would happily trade problems with you.
I cannot hear any weird machine noise because it is drowned out by my tinnitus--
--which sounds like locusts in the trees on a night in the upper 90's.
Rotten locusts-- they sound so close, but my tongue can never reach one.![Mr. Green ](./images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif)

Re: Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
No probs. I have a Resmed for Her, but it's just that the Youtube clip has the exact same noise, even though it's a Vauto on there. Since I've got some answers saying it def. shouldn't be happening, I'll ask the dealer to exchange it. I think they will.
Re: Sound of breathing going through machine. Is it common?
Thanks, Pugsy. My machine is silent most of the time, but I wasn't totally sure if this might be something harmless that just 'happens sometimes'. Just my luck to get a *%$#^& lemon!!Pugsy wrote: ↑Thu Jul 02, 2020 9:34 pmI am currently using an AirCurve 10 VAuto....that is not normal. It needs to go back to where you got it from.
