.1-.5 events per hour??

Post by Atarithejedi » Mon Feb 28, 2022 11:58 pm

So I've been looking on the Forum and online. I just don't understand my air sense from. RESMED for example it last night and said that I had .1 events per hour. My question is how can it be if I slept just 6 hours with it on? I've noticed this inconsistency with the math unless partial blocks are counted differently I guess. But when I do the research I don't see anything to indicate that. Don't get me wrong I'm glad that my number dropped to well below 1. But I just don't understand how that can be. Maybe it's taking an average of all the days? Anyone knows the answer that would be great

If you slept 6 hours and had 1 event during that time, your AHI is 1.16 events per hour per hour....(these numbers are rounded). It calculates every day and the machine will accumulate and calculate averages for week, month, etc. These figures are in your machine's screen sleep report.

  • That value is an average
  • Where are you getting the value, the AirSense sleep report screen can show you the AHI for the last night, week, month, 6 months....
  • When only one decimal point is being provided, it might be rounding / truncating.

AHI is an average number based on total hours and total events. Number of events divided by hours.
Obviously we can't have a fraction of an event. We might have an hour with no events but when we take overall averages we end up with fractions.

Total number of events...divided by hours of sleep...equals an average and it's reported as AHI.

AHI of say 0.5 over a 6 hour period would mean a total number of events 3 during that 6 hour period.

AHI of say 1.0 over a 6 hour period would mean a total number of events of 6 during that 6 hour period.

AHI of say 3.0 over a 6 hour period would mean a total number of events of 18 during that 6 hour period.

When you have a less than 1.0 AHI over a 6 hour period it means very few events over the 6 hour period. That's good news for sure.

It doesn’t look like rounding (1/6=1.6666) but it could be flooring or trunacating.

Whatever it is….as far as I am aware, it doesn’t matter from a treatment effectiveness perspective.

Am I missing something? 1/6 = 0.16666, not 1.6666

Average for one night means you had around six events all night long, for 6 hours.
They could have been one here, two there, and three close together,
or any other combination. Average is just that--a number.
It is relevant in that quantifying efficacy requires some number.
It is just a way of boiling down the "big picture" so it can be recorded,
and compared with other nights.
