Mouth Taping with Beard... no worky

Post by Dark_Star » Sat May 19, 2007 6:02 am

Well... as some as you know. I am a newbie Cpaper. (Did I just say Cpaper?).

Anyways... I am trying to get it all right.. I have a nasal mask and noticed that I have been mouth breathing. Mostly exhaling .. which not only is waking me up .. but I believe it it is screwing up my therapy.

Ok.. so last night I go Walgreen's and get the Nexcare 2" Paper tape and chap stick.. (Following roosters instructions).

One problem... I have facial hair.. Mustache and beard.

Tape did not work...

Any suggestions.... or is a full-face mask now on my next list.

Try the Hybrid. If your experience turns out like mine, you'll be very happy.

i obviously don't have a beard (yet ) but i use the polident strips also...i just cut one strip in half lengthwise and it does the trick...peels off easily in the morning (i tried the polident paste first....ewww, very yucky)

good luck

Hey Dark. Before you give up on taping, a couple of questions. Do you trim your beard? Did your tape reach skin on the sides?

I too have facial hair and tape. Doing good with it so far. You might try not using the chap stick. Be worth a try anyway. I find that chap stick or salves of various sorts spread through the night and tend to loosen the tape. So does drooling, which no chap stick helps.

I use the comfort lite 2 mask with nasal cushions. I tape right up to the bottom of my nose.

I had to get rid of the full beard and go with goatee type beard. That gives you skin on the sides to tape to.

When it comes to getting good sleep or looking the way I would like to, sleep wins.

BTW, I had a full beard for over 30 years.

Hi Jeff. I can relate. 33 years here. Unfortunately, my beard is now a shadow of it's former self, thanks to hair loss side effects of chemo treatments. My avatar pic was taken a year ago, before treatments. I guess I still think of myself as having a full uncut beard. It's growing back now, currently out of treatment, but I doubt I'll ever have my former beard again.

But as you say, health is more important than appearance.

Hi Mike. Good looking beard. You ever been a Santa? I was a couple of times and was going to do it for a company that places them in malls, but I don't have any kids and don't think I could put up with them for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week between thanksgiving and christmas!

Hey Jeff. I've never been a santa. My wife and I have ten kids between us, but that never made me more inclined to tolerate large numbers of them.

I did go through a period of 6-8 years where little kids were often pulling at their mother's sleeves and whispering, "There's Santa!!". Hehehe. I didn't cut my hair for about 22 years and it was prematurely gray/white and wavy. Fiinally cut it all off about 7 years ago. That pretty effectively put the kibosh on that sort of thing.

I get great results with a chin strap. It's worth trying if you can get one for cheap.

Like Sharon suggested, try polident strips. you wet them and put them inbetween your lips - no hair there (I hope ) The nice thing about them is that you can separate your lips if you really want to, get a glass of water or whatever and reseal them with water.

Pressure 7-9 C-Flex 3 AHI 1.6
Mirage Swift
Marine Mask Seal so my mask doesn't leak
Polygrip Strips so my mouth doesn't leak
Di-Oval for aerophagia
Eye drops for air coming out my tear ducts
Pur-Sleep so I can fall asleep despite all of the above.

Ok ... I now have 2 possible remedies.. thanks to you'all

Polident strips and the Chin strap.

So...off to the drug store I go.. after dinner .. for some Polident

Although, I may owe blarg some huge 'props' for his persistence on the chin strap idea. Which I will try soon....

I hope I don't sound too desperate here... I am "just" trying to get in a routine that works that " gets me through the night".

Hey remember the John Lennon song..
What ever gets you thru the night...
