LOUD alarm clock advice needed!

Post by Carol who can no longer login for some reason » Tue Nov 10, 2009 8:22 pm

Now that I am sleeping SO deeply and SO nicely with my machine, I am sleeping thru three alarm clocks. This includes a clock radio, set to a very loud and annoying station, volume turned at full blast. Can anyone recommend a loud and effected alarm clock that you have found that helps rouse you from the deep cpap sleep??

Carol, how long have you been sleeping good on cpap? I mean, are you still in the repaying sleep debt phase? And how many hours of sleep are you getting on a regular basis? I'm just wondering if enough is not enough because something is yet missing. But if your schedule is requiring you to have short sleep, that would explain difficulty waking. When I was at my worst and didn't really sleep well till almost time for the alarm to go off, none of my alarm efforts were enough. I had a couple friends who would call and let the phone ring till I answered, and would not hang up till they knew I was totally out of the bed. One used to tell me she wanted to hear the toilet flush. Maybe you could incorporate more of the senses like bright lights to come on on a timer, and a vibrating alarm. Just be sure the need for all this isn't an indicator of all not being well. Best wishes.
Kathy

Katy Good post when I first was on Cpap I had the same problem of sleeping thru an alarm clock. Now I wake up about 10 to 15 min before the alarm goes off in the morning unless I take a couple of Precocet pills when I go to bed.
Here's looking at you kid.

Hi Patrick! Not being in late night chat makes it a little easier to get up in the morning, huh?

I haven't used an alarm in years and since I use ear plugs every night that's probably a good thing.
I sleep pretty well on a regular basis and make sure there are eight hours available when I go to bed.
That means I have to give up on the baseball game in the sixth inning sometimes, but the benefit of sufficient sleep is just too good to mess with.
Take into account what Kathy says, but make sure you are allowing enough time for sleep AND that you're using good sleep hygiene.

Good Luck,
TerryB

I had the same experience in the first six months of CPAP Therapy. Looking back at it in hindsight, instead of figuring out ways of being awakened, discern why I'm so tired and how can I get more sleep, like going to bed earlier or taking a 'cat nap'.

Reminds me of the 'Red Dot' on the forehead syndrome. During tax off-season, we had an Accountant who would put his head on the desk to sleep in the afternoon, and then walk down the hall with a red circle on his forehead.

Sleep can happen anywhere, as long as it's safe!!

If you do a google search for 'alarm clock hearing impaired' or deaf, you'll come up with a number of options.

Our CPAP Wiki has an article devoted to sleep tips and sleep schedules. This article links to a webpage with the 10 Most annoying Alarm Clocks on the market. There's one that rolls away from you so you have to go searching. It's a fun gander for all: http://bit.ly/34Qkmc

There is an alarm clock called (I think) Sonic boom. It has a vibrating pad that goes under your pillow.

There's another one that runs away. It jumps off the night table and rolls all around until you get it and turn it off.

Many years ago, before I started CPAP, I used to use a wind up alarm with a loud ringer...and it was far enough away from the bed that I had to get up to shut it off, My poor neighbors!
